Gauging opinions on the quality of Autometer's stuff

How are their gauges?........reliable?.........good craftsmanship?.........please reply if you've owned some of their stuff.

wren57 Sep 5, 2003 02:31 PM

never owned any, but i've never heard anyone complain about them... they are the official gauges of NASCAR and I think NHRA too... how hard could it be to make a reliable gauge? Its a few wires and a little conversion computer...

Chebosto Sep 5, 2003 04:09 PM

i've owned their mechanical boost, electric fuel pressure, and shift lite on my previous cars....

their Silver Sport Competition (ultra lights) ones are cool... and you can change the bulb in the back if you want to change the lites..

for the price, they're reliable... and i really like em..

summit racing is probably the best place to get em...

I like ultra-lights too! Sharp looking and do a decent job. I had the white face gauges with aluminum bezel-- It depends on your application I guess. I give em thumbs up!

Thanks for the input guys.......i just ordered a couple from summit......that, and a lotec gauge pod from their own website.......if everything gets here this week, i could be doing the install next weekend

johnsZ Sep 5, 2003 06:07 PM

i like VDO Cockpit over the Autometer, not a fan of the white faces, and with the reddish orange plus the buffed aluminum housings, not spiffy looking (this is opinion...)

elektrik_juggernaut Sep 5, 2003 06:24 PM

The ones i ordered are black faced with silver bezels, to match the stock gauges.......i love consistancy

Chebosto Sep 5, 2003 08:05 PM

which gauges did you end up getting?

FLY BY Z Sep 5, 2003 09:59 PM

Autometer is the standard in aftermarket guages.

elektrik_juggernaut Sep 6, 2003 12:37 AM

I got 2 of the sport comp series air/fuel gauges........one for each cylinder bank

I agree. I have owned alot of their gauges and they were all of very high quality. If I need a gauge, I always get Autometer.

ve six Autometer Ultra-Lite gauges in my 1998 T-78 Supra.

jesseenglish Sep 6, 2003 07:23 AM

Hey EJ, those aren't wideband O2 gauges. Those are narrowband ones, which won't help all that much. You really should get a wideband setup IMHO.

03SilverstoneZ Sep 6, 2003 08:52 AM

I have had nothing but great perfomance and style from their Carbon Fiber Ultra-Lite Gauge series. I had them on my WRX and have them on my 94 Rx-7, and wouldn't think twice about it again.

I will purchase some more once I figure out where I want to put them in the Z :D

just my .02

Yeah........i'd like to go wideband........but i'd have to get 2 to watch both cylinder banks.........it think the narrowband should be fine for giving me a general idea of whether or not i should shut it down.

As for placement, i ordered a Lotec universal pillar gauge pod......should look pretty decent until the custom pod is fabricated

Do you guy's think i can run a parallel connection off of the stock O2 sensors without too much of a current drop?......that would be sweet if i could do that.......i wouldn't even have to run wires outside of the cabin since the stock O2 sensor wires run up to the ECM

jesseenglish Sep 6, 2003 05:19 PM

Don't see why not, plus they are very low voltage, so the shorter the wire the better.

elektrik_juggernaut Sep 6, 2003 05:28 PM

Yeah.....thats what i was thinking too......and the ECM doesn't look at the current, so a parallel connection should be fine:)

Chebosto Sep 7, 2003 11:01 AM

ooh.. A/F gauges? yikes...

i've noticed alot of my friends who had the autometer gauges were getting incorrect readings..
sorry. i shoulda mentioned that sooner..

if you want to monitor A/F... you should get an EGT instead.. its slightly better... my maxima buddies tend to like A/F gauges from Fields....

Wicked4u2c Sep 7, 2003 01:04 PM

Autometer gauges are good, I personally would not put them on my Z that's for sure. I guess because every ricer has these gauges I almost feel like it degrades the Z. I would rather Get HKS or Delphi more style....

elektrik_juggernaut Sep 7, 2003 01:22 PM

i'm not really looking for exact readings.......i just wanna get an idea of whether or not i'm on rich side of stoich.....if i'm looking at what the ECM is seeing, i think it should be fine

Yeah, i was looking at the HKS's for a while.......their nice, but i would have had problems getting them onto the pillar being 60mm
