Electronics saved my motor last night
 

I don't know if its the stock computer or my aftermarket utec that did it, maybe you guys know. Last night my wastegate pipe burned a hole in my lower radiator hose and I lost all coolant. The engine over heated and I didn't even notice since since new I have never had an issue with heat so I rarely look at it. My computer backed off power first then it slowed me to a hault. It barely let me hit the gas. I had to limp to the walmart that I was a block from and as soon as I got in the parking lot the car shut off. If it weren't for the tuning I would have never noticed the engine overheating. It never even got above the H line tho, it sat right at it but even with no coolant the car wouldn't let the engine get too hot. That impressed me.

Ok, in case anyone was keeping track of this, I finally put the car back together and the motor is just fine. However, I think the power steering pump might have been messed up from the heat cause now everytime I start the car it squeals real bad. After a minute or so the squealing stops and then it will only squeal real bad if I turn it all the way left and right. Once I've been driving for awhile it goes away. I don't want to automatically assume its the pump though cause coolant got all over everything so I'm going to take my belt off and clean it real good and steam clean the front of the engine and get the pullys real good.

Prob cause you started to knock/pinp really bad with the heat. The sensor for you coolant doesn't work well if there is no coolant going to it IE no coolant in the system.

I don't know if I was knocking at all yet, I haven't plugged my laptop in to see it tells me anything new. The sensor is fine though, I just didn't watch it cause I normally don't have any issues and the coolant drained so fast. I filled it back up and drove home which was a total of about a mile and all the coolant was gone by the time I got home and it was just starting to get a little hot when I pulled into my garage.

Like i said , without coolant, you sensor can't properly work. I will get hot while driving without coolant, really fing hot, but without coolant contacting the sensor, you won't know.

Oh gotcha, yeah didn't think about that. Good point. Crap I was hoping it would be accurate so that there would be no other damage but now I have to wait and see if anything was damaged by the heat.

he says he was able to fill it up with coolant and drive more, so not likely it seized... unless you are thinking there is another reason the engine shut off. i'm certainly no engine expert..

Well the check engine light came on when it overheated, and when I filled it back up with water and drove home the check engine light turned off and it was running just fine. The only thing I'm worried about is when I got close to home I could hear a faint chattering sound. Haven't run the car since. I haven't gotten a new hose and I decided to take my headlights apart and paint them while the car is down.

If you knew you had a severe coolant leak you should've just pulled over. I learned the hard way, I blew an apex seal on my Rx7 after a coolant hose blew, and drained the system. I too didn't realize the severity of the problem at the time. Thought it was just overheating normally because I was running hot laps in an old-@$$ stock car.

I didn't realize I had lost all my coolant until later I just thought I was overheating some. I knew it was hot thats when the computer limited throttle and I putted back to the walmart parking lot and then realized I had no coolant. I didn't run it hard after I realized I was over heating, that would be stupid.

I dont know how you can sleep at night, I would have had that hose changed six times by now lol

Honestly normally thats how I am too but I've just got too many things going on right now and they don't allow me to worry about it right now. I haven't even gone by Nissan to see if they have the hose in stock. I'm gonna run there tomorrow tho. If they have it I'll swap it out tomorrow some time.

Did you do a comp test or a leak-down test? IMO a leak down test would be perfect here....
I think new belts and clean pulleys wouldn't be a bad idea. Subbing for teeeh learning

ya, the squeeling sounds like the belts are slipping. I would guess coolant got all over them so they need to be cleaned or replaced and the pulleys cleaned.

Came here to say the same thing. Check your belts!

Going tomorrow to get everything cleaned. Haven't done any kind of compression check or leak down at all but I think I might. Not so much cause I think it messed anything up but it'd be nice to know since I'm now at 90k on the motor and have been boosted since 30k on a stock block.
