what clutch with CD009 transmission? need help ASAP

After fighting with my warranty company (the warranty group) for weeks. I have finally got them to approve me for a brand new CD009 transmission. The shop doing the work called and said that they have in thier notes that the CD009 transmissions have/ require a different clutch assembly. I have a 2003 6MT. My contact at Nissan states that whenever they replaced trannies with the CD009 units under Nissan warranty, they always recieved the units with new clutches already mounted. So he is unsure if a different one is required. Have any 03-05 owners replaced thier transmissions with CD009's while retaining thier original clutch?

I tried searching, but couldn't come up with anything conclusive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Guys.

well, the clutch isnt "already mounted" to a tranny, the clutch mounts to the flywheel, which is mounted to the crank - ON THE ENGINE.......

so i doubt your tranny will be shipped with a clutch...

you can reuse,

the only issue is that your new tranny needs the short "pivot ball", but the tranny i would assume would come with the pivot ball and FORK on it...to me that would be a complete tranny shipped???

However, if your an enthusiest......nows the time to get a new clutch.......dont know what your plans are for the car, ie track, etc....

But if they are doing the warranty work, they shouldn't charge you but $50 bucks more to install an after market clutch in the car...since the tranny will be out and clutch swap is but 15 minutes max at a shop with a lift...

I have a 2003 Z and I'm on my 3rd transmission. Back in the day, they used to give free clutches with the transmission swap but apparently they changed the rule sometime between my 2nd and 3rd transmission. So, they shouldn't give you a brand new clutch with your new transmission from my experience.

As far as I know, 03-05 use the same clutch but it does look like Nissan changed it a bit in between. I believe either will work, though.

Like Jason said above, though, I suggest upgrading your clutch while the tranny is already out. It'll save you a LOT of time and money down the line. What clutch you should consider is all dependent on you and your needs.

I thought it was odd when my contact at Nissan said they recieved the transmissions with the clutches mounted. Either way the point was that a new one was included with the CD009's if replaced under Nissan's warranty. My only question was if the new clutch was any different from what was originally equipped.

Solid advice from both of you on replacing the clutch while the trans is out. That's the route I'm going, it'd be stupid not to. Shop is doing the replacement free of charge. I don't have any high TQ expectations from my bolt on DE, so I'm thinking Exedy's Sport clutch should be sufficient for the price. poor timing on this deal I'd love to swap the flywheel at this time too, but Christmas and birthdays are throwing that option right out the window.

Thanks for the quick replies.

no problem.........

Certainly Nissan knows what clutch is appropriate for your car. Do not understand why the CD009 transmission requires a unique clutch.

I'll dig up my dealer paperwork when i get home, that's a good question. Can you provide the 2003 clutch/pressureplate/flywheel part numbers? If so i can compare that to the part numbers that they installed with my CD009 tranny. I don't see why it would be a different part. It is my understanding that the revision is an internal change, thus shouldn't effect anything external to the tranny (Clutch, flywheel etc.).

I'm glad this was brought up. I too am getting my transmission replaced (009) but I have the JWT Clutch and an upgraded heavy duty pivot ball. Sounds like I won't be able to switch over the pivot ball? Am I ok with the clutch at least?

yes you will be fine.......you can get the correct upgraded pivot ball and have them put it on prior to the install...

so the dealer did a warranty replacement even though you had a JWT clutch?? they didnt give you any crap? or are you buying the tranny outright?

I'm hoping to have it replaced with an aftermarket warranty. I bought the car used. It's a warranty through Chrysler.

Play stupid, I did the same thing with my act clutch on and it worked. But be aware your car will no longer be under warranty after the adjuster see's your clutch.

Good luck dude hope it goes smoothly.

Do you think they will be able to tell? (the JWT looks very "stock") I have been wondering how in depth they go into things? I am going to have my work cut out for me returning my car back to stock for all of this. I am almost considering canceling the warranty and taking my refund and just buy a news trans and install it myself :dunno:

The clutch was different between 03-05 and 06.

That's what my concern was when starting this thread. I confirmed with Adam at Z1 (cool guy btw) when ordering my clutch, that what was currently on the Z would've worked with the CD009. Truth will be told tomorrow when both the clutch and transmission arrive.

If the mods in your sig are whats currently installed on your Z....I'd expect your warranty to be voided on the spot. I've seen the CD009 sell between $600(used)-$1895+(new). My main concern was my transmission when I dropped the car off, but I handed them a list of other things that I knew needed to be replaced. The warranty covered another $2700 in parts/labor on top of what they are paying for the transmission. Proved to be very valuable versus having to pay for those out of pocket. As far as "how in depth" they go..my contact at Nissan informed me that 3rd party warranty companies usually only send an adjuster out if there is a substantial dollar amount involved. Other than that, they usually just confirm over the phone with the repair shop's technician that something needs to be replaced.

Please update us on what the final verdict is. Thanks in advance....
