A/c delete
 

Trying to free up a bit of space in my engine bay and i am considering removing the a/c. I did do a search but that given not a very hard search of the forum before posting this.

I was just wondering if there are any long term side affects on the engine to removing the A/C...

I live in a climate that is not overly warm so i never use it, be it to help heat up the car or cool it down..

Since your defrost utilizes the A/C compressor, you lose that too. If foggy windows bother you, I would advise against it. I would go insane, but some people don't mind. Are you doing it solely for cosmetic reasons?

Somewhat, I'm twin turbocharging and would free up alot of space for piping... I have a truck so there is no need for me to drive during winters or really cold days.

I also figure i can get a bit of power by lightening the load on the crank, yes?

If the AC isn't on, there's very little load. The belt turns the pulley, but none of the internal parts are moving unless the AC clutch is engaged. It's no more load than the idler pulley. The pulley probably weighs about a pound, so that's not adding much to the inertia.

Removing the AC would involve rerouting the belt or having an idler pulley where the compressor is. Seems like a lot of trouble for very little gain. What you might do is reduce the size of the condenser coil to free up some space. If it's only going to be used for defogging, it doesn't need to be nearly as big as it is.

I'm old enough to remember driving cars without AC to keep the windshield from fogging up, and it was a royal PITA.
