Default JWT clutch/flywheel combe noise at low RPM

Hi guys,

Just installed the clutch/flywheel on my 07 350z. My car makes this chatter/slipping noise when at low RPM (800 to 1500) especially noticeable 2nd and 3rd gear. Lets say I'm on 2nd at about 3k RPM then I let the gas go and let the car slow down to just about 1k RPM then apply gas again, it would make that noise until it gets above 2k then the noise goes away. Is that normal? I know people have experienced chatter when idle for these clutch/flywheel combo but never heard of chatter at low RPM.

Thanks for the help guys.

I hear noise below 2k rpm. It's different than the idle chatter, but if I didn't know I had the lightweight flywheel, I would think it had a problem.

not sure what threads you were reading before/after your purchase, but what you described is precisely what happens when you install a lightweight flywheel

Yeah its that way it works without a dampener on the flywheel (dual mass wheels). Sounds a little like a loose/rattling fitting. Note, this can be assisted with the use of heavier oils in the tranny. HOWEVER BE WARNED, heavier oils are not suggested. I use them and have not had any problems yet... but before you consider them know some oils can damage certain metals in the tranny and also create a rough cold shifting situation (also not good on the tranny). With that said, the heavier oil in there make the tranny noises very livable (still there, just not bad).

Sounds like a defective clutch. JWT should replace it with a new one.

It's natural, I have the JWT Clutch and fywheel also. You get use to it, I only really hear it when idle. It barely even notice it now. I do no regret having it at all though. (and yes that's normal).

I had the JWT clutch and flywheel on my 2008 350Z and I had all that chatter and noise your talkng about. It's normal to me I thought I could handle having a lightweight flywheel but I couldn't so I went ahead and put the stock fly back on and combined it with clutchmasters FX300 clutch. I'm happy now with no noise at all...

I just installed my setup on my 08 Z (coming from a SPEC super twin), the chatter isn't nearly as bad as the flywheel that came with the SPEC. You can live with it.

Ok guys, thanks for the response. also, when the chatter noise happens, it "feels" like the clutch is slipping a bit... like it's not accelerating has it should. also i can feel a bit of rattle from the car. does anyone have this also?

also interestingly, i don't hear any chatter at all when in neutral like many others have experienced.

Thanks

it's 100% in your imagination, or in how you're driving it

a clutch is not going to slip at low load, low rpm, and then magically grip at high rpm, high load

the rattle is exactly what everyone describes - it is a byproduct of fitting a single mass flywheel such as you have

do all lightened flywheels do that? i'm looking into the ACT Prolight or Streetlight with the Exedy Stage 1.. would noise like that happen with my setup? thanks

The heavier versions are a little better but its very common with all. Its my understanding the noise is generated from the output shaft/tranny and the stock dual mass flywheel merely helps to mask it. You take away the mask and you get the noise.

Thinks for the heads up, I just ordered my today. I've heard of the chatter, but never heard it. Oh well, I'm sure it wont be louder than my Vortech anyway.
