Anyone got a Nissan oil filter that's been cut open?
 

I cut open the Parts Plus oil filter the dealer used the last time they changed the oil in my 350Z and the last Fram filter from our 2.4L Accord.

You can see the Fram has at least twice the amount of filter media, and it takes up almost the whole can. The Fram filter is a little larger, though.

The Parts Plus filter has a big spring holding the element in place, and about half the can is empty.

The inlet holes are the same size, but the Fram has ten to the PP's eight.

The anti-drainback valve in the PP filter is a little heftier than the one in the Fram, but that doesn't necessarily mean it works any better.

I've read some reviews that call the Fram junk, but it looks pretty good compared to the PP.

Does anyone have a Nissan filter that's been cut open for comparison? It might also be interesting to see a Fram filter for a 350Z, which is the same as the Altima and a lot of other late model Nissans.

I don't know if they still are, but yes that IS cardboard on the filter.

I've read a couple oil filter articles and some have said how big the filter media doesn't really matter. What really matters is how well it filters so smaller ones may have media that filters much better than the bigger ones that need more surface area to get similar filtering efficiency.

From what I have read, Fram=Scam. But i have no empirical evidence to back this up.

I've always used Bosch/Proline or Wix filters... curious to know what their insides look like now... hmmm

Heard purolator was best for the Z.

Ive seen cutouts for purolator and mobil 1. I use either.

some university did a bunch of studies on them. The mobile 1 and bosch rated the same (bosch much cheaper) and the frams were glue together and didn't hold up. The purolator showed to be great but the pore size was so small that they clogged faster.

the parts of a fram were very low quality compared to the bosch and mobile 1. Also, quite a few "dealership" filters were all the same exact filter just rebranded.

do a google search for oil filter analysis and you should find the university's site.
