Final Drive swapping question

I searched the 4.08 thread, and couldn't come up with the answer i was looking for. I work with a guy who has a 2004 Frontier, MT King Cab, and asked him if he would be willing to sell his gears to me. The truck only has like 15k miles on it . I told him i would look to see if my stock gears would benefit him, and if they did he would be willing to swap me. So, will my gears be good to put in his truck? My guess was the longer gears would be good for highway driving?? :dunno: Any help would be much appreciated

I'm not really sure about your question. But I'm willing to sell you a set I got for $250 shipped.

Can you just swap him pumpkins?

i think his truck would be a terrible dog with stock Z gears and prolly lose alot of low speed towing. if thats not of his concern, should be fairly easy swap.

He hardly drives it. Just back and fourth to work. He thought they might help him on the highway, maybe better mpg? I wasn't gonna tell him anything until I consulted the forum. Ha but I don't think he pulls anything with it.

Oh yes the gears will be good in a 2004 Frontier, MT King Cab. You just tell him davidv said so.

Ha will do sir. (sarcasm aside)

this is the stupidester topic I ever seend'
With the amount of labor to swap these gears just buy some damn gears. Cheap ass people

A-Town-Z 11-27-2011 05:27 PM

@ 0jiggy0---It's an option a$$hole. If you don't have anything nice to say...GTFO. I have more then enough money to purchase the gears, I was just gonna help a co-worker out, and swap him if they were beneficial to him.

If you do all the work except for the gear setup , it will cost about $200 each for a driveline shop to set the gear lash.

Thanks for the info terrasmak. I don't think I'll have a problem doing that.

Honestly i think the taller gears will hurt the Fronti's gas milage because it will be too much for that little 4 cyl , yes the RPMs will be lower per gear but it will strugle getting up to speed causing more gas to burn .

I agree, his truck will struggle very hard to get moving in 1st gear. Which is where you also lose the most gas mileage.

And swapping the gear sets may not be a 1 weekend event either.

I just got my 4.08 gears setup and i waited over 2 months to get the required pinion shim from courtesyparts.com. Local dealer couldn't get them any faster either.

So you run a descent possiblitity that you and/or he will be stuck for a descent amount of time.

I see your car is a base model as well, I would highly suggest picking up a used base model pumpkin (I got mine for $100 that had 49k miles on it) and building up a solid setup with the 4.08 gears, LSD (I went with a Quaife), new bearings, and the Nismo finned rear cover.

IMO no sense in going thru the motions of setting up a set of gears with an one wheel drive differential.

I have an enthusiast. With the stock viscous lsd. I don't track the car, and want to install the gears to experience the added acceleration. Just to make the car more enjoyable. Im not going to take the diff's apart until i have all the necessary parts to do with out any hang-ups. But, if you think he won't even be able to move in first, then ill just buy them from Z1. I think that will be a better option anyway.

ian99rt 11-28-2011 11:45 AM

I got my gears at mynismo.com bc they were the cheapest I could find.

Sorry for the assumed base model. I was skimming the thread and thought I saw it in your signature.

A-Town-Z 11-28-2011 04:37 PM

It's all good brosef. Did they include all the extra stuff that z1 does?
