Upper oil pan seals

Has anyone ever tried installing the upper oil pan with only RVT instead of using the front and back lip seals? They always seem to leak where the RVT meets the rubber seal.

it will not leak if done properly. i've done mine on 2 motors i put together.

it will 100% leak if you dont have that seal

What does that cheap rubber seal do that good RVT can't? It's a real **** setup if you ask me.

rtv flexs its not made to fill gaps that large i can tell you 100% i tryed rtv because my gasket got pushed out and was lazy and just ripped it the rest of the way out. it will without a doubt leak.

Does that motor produce that much crank case pressure that it would push it out? This is my first import build, I'm more of a F/I mustang guy.

i built my engine very loose but a few people have had it push out.

When I was experimenting with new catch cans one of my check valves became stuck closed and I blew the front timing seal right out on the highway. Giant mess that required me to take the whole front of the car off because I couldn't get the crank pulley off with my oversized radiator. Thankfully it wasn't the rear main.

Like Jerry said, that rubber piece fills a gap that rtv won't. I've done a few now for myself and others without a single leak. I've used both RTV black and red with the same results. I use rtv on the top and bottom of that rubber seal. I don't go crazy on the amount either. I think too much is just as bad as not enough. I also allow it to fully cure before I do anything. 24hours minimum time.

Thanks guys.

RodiZio 06-10-2013 04:32 PM

Well rtv red and black are way to soft for that type of application. I would you use rtv rigid high torque grey or "No Gasket" it comes in a purple bottle. Once either one of those cure they are firm and tough as hell to remove.

jerryd87 06-10-2013 04:40 PM

i was using grey, its what the factory uses too, its great for sealing my intake but its still not made to fill such a thick space.

RodiZio 06-10-2013 04:48 PM

Yep grey is commonly used on older small block chevy intakes, in the back where the rubber seal usually goes and it's never failed.

jerryd87 06-10-2013 05:34 PM

personally ive never actually seen anyone do that everyone including myself always used the rubber strips with just small dabs in the corner and never had a issue. granted the intake also isnt submerged in oil it just gets splatter

binder 06-10-2013 07:49 PM

I've never had anything leak using black or red. I've been using them for over 10 years between crankcase halves on race bike engines without a single problem. I always go through that debate of which one to use and it ends up being whichever I grab first out of my tool box and they have always worked.

jerryd87 06-10-2013 08:45 PM

ive had red leak over time on oil surfaces but thats after several months. black i have never had leak though but i would expect it since its formulated for that.

RodiZio 06-11-2013 03:47 AM

Jerry the lower oil pan is completely submersed with the weight of the pil pushing down on it all of the time and never leaks.

Binder I thought I was the only guy who uses rtv on motorcycle and atv crankcases. Snowmobiles too! Lol

They all call for it. It's very rare to find cases that use a gasket. Most are machined together and use rtv.

Ok, just picked up front and rear seals along with new o-rings. Wish me luck!
