ODBII scan tool for 2003 nissan 350z?
 

Can anyone suggest an ODBII scan tool for 2003 nissan 350z?

Probably just a bluetooth plug in one will be ok;
I bought a big tool, that I was assured would work on that car (BUT DIDN'T!) :(

Curious to know what didn't work....

I have an Innova 3100 and it works great on all of my OBDII cars. A little bulky but does the job.

Interestingly enough though, when I got my present "project car", someone (not the previous owner) left a Bluetooth scanner in the OBD port. Going to try and figure out where to get the app for it. (Haven't looked at closely to see what it is and how it works but will do that and report back if its worthwhile.)

EDIT: The module that I pulled out of my Benz is not a true diagnostics reader. It turns out to be one of those "tracker"/OBD relay modules that reads the data and transmits info to the cloud. Crash alerts, location services, that sorta thing. Ummm, no thanks.

The accompanying app MAY have some diag capabilities but no.....

I have a $20 Bluetooth one and it works for my needs. Then my dad has a normal cable one but I never have a use for the features. It did help him find out what ABS sensor was setting a bunch of lights on though. It really told him the exact one. No diagnostics needed

My UpRev Cipher can read everything but the BCM codes on my '03.

I use a cheap $8 scanner off ebay. I also have cheap $4 bluetooth ones that work (torque app android) They also show a bunch of other info (rpm, temp ect) you can set up gauges on your phone and have live date(mine has a half second lag or so)

Mine doesn't read the data - it CAN however (which is good) ERASE any codes, which helped me once.

What year is your Z?

I have a $20 bluetooth module paired with the Torque app on my android phone. Works great. Pulls/clears codes. Can pull real-time sensor information. If you wanted to, you could link it to a tablet and use it as a customizable digital gauge display.

All the 350Z's are obdII compliant so it really shouldn't matter what tool you use.

I have this module with the Torque app also. I have yet to do codes, but I am lucky enough and haven't had any problems with the Z.

Does anyone have a tablet hooked up in their dash with a usb hooked up to Osiris Standard? If you do and have a build page or something post up a link... This seems like it would be a very good setup if it would work on a windows based pc I would assume a tablet would be just as good.

NO; sorry, but NOT every unit WILL work! (Hence the reason for my post)

I HAVE a VGATE VS-890; I was assured it WOULD work, as it's obd2 compliant etc, as mentioned somewhere about SHOULD work, BUT - It DOESN'T!

Yes; I can use LIMITED features, but is certainly not fully compatible...

Get osiris standard, it will work and let you play with settings.

i don't know about every other single year, but at least our '03s don't work with some units. i guess it runs a different protocol. when it failed, it just kept scanning and trying different protocols but never connecting to the vehicle's ecu

like Steve Mack, i have also had some readers (bluetooth and the big one) not work with the '03, but work with other vehicles

all below info is supplementary and does not really matter, but sharing is caring :)

the bluetooth that didn't work on mine was another random eBay one, and the big one that didn't work was my cousin's older innova (but like MicVelo, the newer series one did work it was 3100 or 3200 or something)

the vehicles that those units did work with (but not mine) were:
- 06 mazda mazdaspeed 6
- 04 toyota echo
- 02 toyota corolla
- 15 ford mustang

the units that specifically did not work with mine happened to also did not work with my friend's '06 mini cooper s

I can verify they don't all work for some reason I am not aware of. Personal experience.

That's a bummer.

If no one knows what the actual cause is, I guess it's just a crap shoot. Buy a module or scanner from somewhere with a good return policy I guess?

yeah, my guess that the devices that did not work do not support the protocol required doesn't really make sense because my '03 connects using ISO 9141-2 (5 baud init, 10.4 kbit/s)

is it safe to assume all year models use the same protocol?

according to what i can find, 9141 was created in 1989 and 9141-2 was created in 1994. considering how old it is, i can't see any reason why there would be OBD readers on the market not supporting it. especially an official off the shelf Innova product that wouldn't work with my car but did with many others (while older, it wasn't 1994 old)

the Torque app also does has a warning when looking in the settings/info stating that "cheap chinese readers" (aren't they all?) run a high possibility of having communication errors, it does not really make sense that it would be protocol specific errors, because it will work fine with other vehicles

but then again i don't claim to know how it works lol
