Re-programming throttle body

I saw a thread on the process for reprogramming the throttle body sensor...anybody remember where it is or how to do it? Thanks.

VandyZ 04-13-2004 05:54 AM

I think all the resetting procudures can be found on technosquare's web site. There is a link in my sig.

Here's the related procedures.

* Accelerator Pedal Release Position Learning Procedure.
1. Make sure that the accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
3. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
4. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
5. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.

* Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
1. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch is “ON”.
3. Turn ignition switch is “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
Make sure that the throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound.

* Idle Air Volume Learning (Throttle Position Learning)
It's best to time with a watch/clock.
1. Perform “Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning”.
2. Perform “Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning”.
3. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
4. Turn ignition switch “OFF” and wait at least 10 seconds.
5. Conform that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
6. Repeat the following (steps 7a, 7b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
7a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD)
7b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
8. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the Check Engine Light (CEL) stops blinking and turned ON.
9. Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the CEL is ON.
10. Start engine and let it idle.
11. Wait 20 seconds.
12. Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure the idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications.

* ECU Accelerator Pedal Reset Procedure
Note: Timing is critical for this to work!
1. Turn the ignition switch to on. Dash gauges lit. Don’t start the engine!
2. Wait 3 seconds.
3. Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal 5 times within 5 seconds.
4. Wait 7 to 10 seconds.
5. Fully depress the accelerator pedal for approximately 10 seconds. At this point the check engine light starts to blink quickly indicating Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic results) has started.
6. Release accelerator pedal and wait 5 to 10 seconds.
7. Fully depress the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds. At this point the check engine light should change to blinking slowly indicating “Erasing ECU Memory”.
8. Release the accelerator pedal and turn the ignition switch to off.
9. Restart the engine. The check engine light should be out.

Note: If the check engine light doesn't blink as described in steps 5 & & 7, then the ECU isn't reset.

* If above didn't work, you'll need to disconnect the battery negative for 24 hours. (I pump the accelerator and brake to "bleed down" the ECU memory for good measure.) This method is almost foolproof as long as all ECU control parameters are within their normal ranges.

Re: Re: Re-programming throttle body

What does this do for rhe car, does it reprogram the computer to increase performance? Please explain the benifits to doing this, and if I should leave my battery unhooked while I am out of town over the weekend.

Great post and I can't wait to learn more!

Cra Z 04-18-2004 08:19 AM

I also want to know what this does.... can anyone help ??? thnx

It resets the ecu and the ecu then relearns the current environment and readjusts fuel, air, etc... accordingly. Otherwise, it just takes longer for the ecu to learn the changes made to your car. This will only take you so far as there are limitations programmed into the ecu from the factory. At this point, you may want to consider a reflash of the ecu which will enable you to tune your car beyond these limitations. great post btw daveo...thanks

What if you make a mistake in the reset procedures?

Infern0 04-19-2004 07:45 PM

I heard that stock, the throttle only depresses around 85%...will this fix it so that when you depress the throttle that it is 100%??? If not, how is this attained?

I believe that its the throttle body that only opens to 85% at WOT. You have to have the ECU flashed to get it to open 100% at WOT

Infern0 04-20-2004 10:30 AM

I see.

If you just want to reset the ECU how do you do that? Just unplug the battery for about 30 minutes?

Is it just me or would the TB only opening up 85% REALLY fu*k up performance...why do they do that?

rolling 03-01-2006 08:59 PM

hmm first i heard of the %85 problem.. i never saw it mentioned in chip makers websites

DayBlueZ 03-01-2006 10:03 PM

The battery has to stay unconnected for more like 12 -14 hours. I'm not sure if that resets it totally or not. The TS method of resetting doesn't totally reset the ECU. I'm not sure how far it resets it but, it doesn't reset to factory standards.

rolling 03-02-2006 05:12 PM

o yea how can you tell if it did or not?

jcpeyton 03-02-2006 05:19 PM

Disconnecting your battery will only reset the ECU to OEM spec and (maybe) clear a few error codes. It WILL NOT accomplish the same, or even close, to a reflash or properly tuned piggyback. These are two entirely different processes. It certainly will not cause your TB to open wider than OEM spec.

Actually 24 hours for full reset. and you're right, the TS method doesnt reset the ECU properly.

you guys see that new crawford video with the dual throttle bodies? that looks 85% to me. It wasn't perfectly flat against the flow of air

if you mess up any of the procedures your car will either explode and you will die a horrible burning death or nothing will happen at all. It just depends on your car;)
