Thank you Monsta for the guide! Your approximate fluid amounts were good (I have a small bit left over) and directions were straight-forward. Easy and satisfying job!

Driveability didn't really change, which is a good sign. The fluids were likely decent before, but I did it anyway since I'm a new owner.

Cheers,

Chris Oster

Hey guys. I paid 200$ at a Nissan dealership today to have them do a transmission flush and fill. Does this sound like a reasonable price? Of course I overpaid, but car was definitely in need. Planning to get the necessary equipment to do my own transmission flush when I move into a house with a garage next month. Just curious as to how shafted I was with the 200$ cost.

Changing the tranny fluid is easier than motor oil imo. Just get the right tool to refill. Cost me 30 bucks with redline oil.

I'm about to do mine.

Little safety trick: When replacing transmission or differential fluid always remove the fill bolt first. Besides having the fluids flow out faster it's better to find out if the fill plug is stuck before draining the transmission / differential..

I didn't Read the whole thread but I just changed my tranny and diff fluid with valvoline sysn and used a fluid pump from advance auto so much better than using a grease gun.

Changing the fluid in my 03 Auto, and it only drained about 4 quarts. On the service manual it says that it holds close to 10 7-8 quarts.

Dip stick says its full so why does it say it holds close to 11 quarts?

Auto transmissions have a torque converter that holds fluid. It never drains completely by just letting the fluid flow from the drain plug.

Tools Used
10mm Allen Wrench
Drain pan
Floor jack
Four jack stands or a lift.
Suction Pump/Gun. I bought mine from Advanced Auto for $10.
Harbor Freight has one for $4.99.

Rags
Replacement oil 75W90 about 2 quarts. About 4 quarts for transmission.
Two replacement crush washers.

Update:
Adding the requirements as stated in the 2003 Service Manual
Transmission API GL-4,Viscosity SAE 75W-85
Differential API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80W-90

Procedure
1. Make sure wheels are blocked.
2. Raise and support car making sure that it is as level as possible.
NOTE: It is better to drain the fluid when it is warm so it flows easier.
3. Use 10mm allen wrench to loosen fill plug (to ensure you can refill the differential before draining old oil).
4. Using 10mm allen wrench, loosen drain plug and allow diff to drain.
5. Wipe off excess oil from drain plug along with fine metal shavings. Remove old crush washer and install new washer.
6. After diff/trans is drained, reinstall drain plug. 23 - 28 ft-lbs for transmission; 55 - 61 ft-lbs for rear diff.
7. Use 10mm allen wrench to remove fill plug.
8. Remove old crush washer and install new washer onto the fill plug.
NOTE: To fill suction gun, I took off the top, pulled handle out of the gun and poured the oil into it. You could stick the hose into the bottle and suction it out but it wont pick up as much.

9. Using suction gun, fill diff/trans to lower level of fill plug and allow overflow of fluid to drain off.
10. Reinstall fill plug. 23 - 28 ft-lbs for transmission; 55 - 61 ft-lbs for rear diff.
11. Double-check all plugs for correct torque (DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN) and wipe off any excess oil.
12. Lower the car.

NOTE: Since you have the car raised it is a good time to change the engine oil, check your tires for feathering, check your exhaust for leaks and bottoming, check your fuel lines for damage and anything else that may look unusual under your car.
I have been looking for an updated part number for the Nissan OEM MTF. All sites/vendors I found quote this one: 999MP-MTF00P 75W-85. I went to my local Nissan Dealership today and they told me they didn't have that one, but another one with a different part number came up: 99998-75W85

Newer/Updated Manual Transmission Fluid for the 350Z? P/N: 99998-75W85

Can some confirm if this will work for my 2006 Nissan 350Z Roadster 6 speed manual transmission? I can't find anywhere on the bottle if it is GL-4 or GL-5. Thanks everyone

I'm confused and yes I'm a newbie but does the differential and trans oil/fluid go to the same place with the suction pump gun?

Straight answer: no, these are two different and separate components. One sits aft of the engine and the other towards the rear of the Z, between the two rear wheels. Two different types of lubricants are needed and you'll need to use the pump to fill both set of components.

In the main post at what point does he change the rear wheel differential? All I'm seeing is the tranny fluid? Thanks for your help

Reread that first post again. The OP combined the two operations, which is what most of us do when we've got the car up in the air. He talks about draining the diff first and doing the tranny next, but you can do them in whatever order you'd like. Have you worked on your Z much?

Yes nothing major of course still learning. I've only done things such as replacing air intake, brakes, rotors, and also help with a full exhaust system. Also done a little bit of cosmetic work little things like installing front lip splitter, a new hood, and blacking out tail lights but this will be my first time dealing with anything with the transmission.

Don't be confused. I usually only drain about 3.25 quarts of MT-85 from my tranny, so four quarts should do the job. Redline recommends MT-85 for our trannys, as it fits Nissan viscosity recommendations.

This is the correct redline product for the diff yes?

Red Line 57904 (75W90) Synthetic Gear Oil - 1 Quart Red Line 57904 (75W90) Synthetic Gear Oil - 1 Quart

Also does anyone know the washer needed? (or if it's even necessary to replace it)

Thx
