Your best bet is to buy the 06 headlight which come with ballast/bulbs. Should be just a tad over $1k. Please don't put HID bulbs in your halgoen housings. You will blind ppl.

actually your best bet would be to contact a forum member named jun. he sells factory hid kits which includes everything you need and it should cost you less than half of what it'll cost you to buy it from the dealer or any website.

i highly doubt u could simply swap over from whole halogen headlights to xenons

on my last car, the wiring and plugs going into the back of the headlight were different for halogens and xenons, could also be the case for the Z

re putting xenons in the halogen headlights, its fine, in fact i get a very clean cutoff and very wide beam pattern with a philips ultinon 6000K kit from xenondepot.com. Admittedly the light output isnt as good as 4300K, but its a big improvement over the halogens. I prob will end up swapping out to 4300K globes. What you dont get is the auto levelling, but the fact the Z has a psuedo projector means theres no glare like u would have putting xenons in a reflector headlight. I have yet to be high beamed once, incl. driving up hills

so when we change the HID, do we just change the bulb? or do we have to replace ballast as well? i always thought our stock HID isn't all that nice like some other HID i see on the road.

Yea? It looks "fine" to you but the output is garbage. I have seen it in person myself. Also, had the pleasure of being blinded by "kitted" Zs coming down the road with 8000K bulbs a few times around here. Please don't kid yourself. A half *** solution will give you half *** results.

So what is the actual difference in a D2S vs. D2R capsule since they both are identical in apperance.

D2R have a black mark on the bulb, so that the light doesn't reflect where it doesn't have to in the reflector housing. It's basically a modified D2S bulb

But 19,000k looks SO hawt dawg!!! ;-)

Glad to see people are reading up nowadays. Misinformation sucks.

I still manage to get plenty of calls from people who want super high kelvin black-lights for headlamps, why? Its beyond me.

Either way, my personal recommendation is to stick with the brand names when it comes to lighting products (bulbs, ballasts, etc). The less expensive products cost less because they use weaker materials.

The Z headlamps are fairly pricey, so take good care of them! Be careful what bulbs you install, and be sure to polish and maintain the outer lenses.

1) HID kits are garbage
2) Don't install a garbage *** HID kit if you have a base Z with no factory Xenons, you will blind the hell out of incoming traffic
3) The stock bulbs (4300K's) in your factory equipped Xenon Z's will give the best output compared to any other kelvin rating .
4) Stop thinking the higher the number, the higher the output. Its the other way around. The higher the number (kelvin rating) the lower lumens (light output) you will get. Don't go above 6000K with new bulbs, the output will be horrible
5) The difference between D2S and D2R, is that the D2R is made for reflector housings, it has a shield to block unwanted blinding light that the reflector would put if the shield wasnt there. D2S is for projectors, and the shielding is not needed.
6) Stop buying garbage chinese, taiwan bulbs. Always go with OEM quality companies such as Philips or Osram.
7) You want better output and better cutoff sharpness and better color from your headlights? Retrofit your own projectors (which is rare and would be difficult on a Z headlight) or buy the 06 Bi-Xenon heads.
8) End of story. Thank you for your time
