Removing Stock Embelms?
 

Im taking off the 350z emblem and putting on the Fairlady. I know the basics (hair dryer and dental floss) but I was wondering if there was any other advice for taking them off. Also any tips on what to use to put the Fairlady on?

good thread. i just did this on mine about a month ago.

hairdryer and dental floss will get most of it off, make sure u let that hair dryer get the adhesive nice and gooey. once you get the emblem off, use goo gone to get the rest of the adhesive, although it doesnt have to be perfect cuz your just putting another emblem over it.

your fairlady should come sandwiched, a clear piece of plastic on the front and back, and a blue foam piece around the fairlady Z itself. remove the back clear piece but not the front one. place the entire blue foam, emblem, and clear plastic onto the car and align properly. press down on the emblem through the clear plastic to adhere it to the body, then remove the clear plastic and blue foam surrounding the emblem.

voila ur done!

the trick is getting it to look level so make sure you triple check the alighment and position.

Use some "goo-gone" before removing them. It will help loosen the adhesive backing. But make sure to clean and wax the spot before applying the fairladyZ emblem.

You dont have too wax the spot...

You dont have to! But with applying decals, emblems etc, its best to use a clean and smooth surface

QUICK QUESTION GUYS:

I removed the 350Z badge using the floss and hair dryer. I was just wondering if it took almost a whole bottle of GooGone to get rid of the glue. I have been sitting here for 45 minutes getting it off. Almost done, just wanting to see if it was this hard for anybody else.

And goo gone won't hurt the paint finish, correct?

the easiest way to remove the adhesive, is to run your fingers back and forth over it. Eventually, it will "gum" up on itself and start coming off. Goo Gone is safe, but didn't help too much for me.

ya it definitly is not easy to remove that adhesive. dont even worry about using goo gone on ur paint, its safe as long as u dont like hard core scrub on it or nothin.

great job on removing the emblems. grab some pics so we can see what ur car looks like when ur done!!!

ya i suppose a wax would be beneficial in that area, although doesnt the adhesive need something to grab on to? i would think that u want some imperfections in the area. also, make sure you get ALLL the goo gone completely off the paint before applying the new decal.

you should be good to go though.

Nice thread. I want to remove the "Nissan" as well as the "350z" emblems off the rear hatch lid. Does anyone know if there are any holes behind the "Nissan" or "350z" emblems?

Yes and no, respectively. The center emblem has 2 holes underneath, the 350z does not.

What about the hood emblem? Are there holes underneath that emblem?

No holes...

The front bumper has alignment nubs/pins.

I just got my baby back last week from the body shop and had them remove them in order to install the big Z emblem from Courtest Nissan.

If I didn't do it, the nubs/pins would have been visible since their isn't a solid 'bar' going across threading Nissan-just a Z.

There are no holes underneath the front Nissan emblem.

Thanks for the info. I found that out earlier and sent the emblem back. I really like that new Z emblem but not enough to go through the hassle of removing the bump, touch-up paint, etc.

What are the odds? I just got a Fairlady Z emblem today, a buddy of mine from work got it for me for my birthday. I had my old one put on by a body shop, but I think I'm going to do it myself this time.

Some Quick Questions:
About how far away from the paint/emblem should I keep the hair dryer?
How long until it's gooey and how can I tell?
Should I focus on one letter/number at a time or the entire string?
Is it possible to damage the paint with the hair dryer or floss?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, just don't want to screw anything up.

I had my ex gf's hairdryer (knew she was good for something...WHAA HAA HAA!) about 2 to 3 inches from the emblem until it was hot to the touch.

Is it possible to damage the paint with the hair dryer or floss? -
No and no, to my knowledge and from the posts I read. I used fishing line to seperate the glue backing from the emblem. If you want to someday reuse the emblems, make sure they don't fly off and hit the concrete.

How long until it's gooey and how can I tell? -
If you mean from the hairdryer, well, the emblem will wiggle more. If you mean from the Goo Gone step, you'll know from touch.

Should I focus on one letter/number at a time or the entire string? -
I'd do one letter at a time....

Some lessons learned-
After you seperate the emblem w/the glue backing, shoot it with Goo Gone and let it soak in the glue backing, then start to peal it away. It was a PITA! Spray and peal (repeat....over and over!)

I ended up with some minor scratches, but that didn't bother me since I was going to cover it ALL up with another Z side emblem (replacing all my GOLD emblem with OEM finished ones).

I read that someone took a valve stem piece and fitted it to a drill to take off the glue backing. I'm still doing research on this method, since I'm also taking off my 350Z rear deck lid emblem off and NOT replacing it with an emblem. So, I definitely do not want any scratches.

i wouldnt wax it lol.
could perminatley stain the paint by doing that haha.

just use goo gone to get the **** off ur paint. dont wax unless its perfectly off. but theres no need to wax it. the other guy doesnt know what hes talking about.

cuz if u make the mistake by not getting 100% of it off, and u wax on top of that, good luck on never getting it off.
