Question about painting engine covers

Well, i painted them with the duplicolor high heat paint, but it rubs off whenever i touch it. Its been over a few weeks and it still does it. I think its because i didnt prime it. What are you supposed to prime the engine covers with, and also is sanding needed? I dont get how everyone got their engine covers so shiny like it had a clear coat on it....

Oh yea, does anyone know how to get the paint I added onto my covers off? I didnt do anything but wash the plastic before applying, so hopefully it will be easy.

dont see how you could sand it much.

does it flake off? or like rub off as tho it isnt dry?

sounds like the paint is the problem, not the prep.

i would have sanded it a tiny bit first then prepped with promoter then paint then clearcoat.

if i remember correctly, if you flip the cover over, you can see the two prongs of the emblem sticking through the holes. i just used an awl to push the emblem out from the back.

You have to use Bulldog Adhesion promoter in the plastic pieces before painting or the paint just won't stick. You can get it an most auto parts stores (O'Reily, Autozone) or at paint suppliers.

Clearcoat it after the painting is done.

i saw that bulldog stuff but didnt get it. so far i have 2 coats of primer, and 1 coat of the paint. im going to put 3 coats of the paint and then 2 coats of the clear coat...sound good?

i did my battery and fluid covers a couple months ago using the same method and it still looks great. we'll see how it goes.

I follow the steps of the master when attempting such feats...

Most high heat paint requires that the paint be "baked on" so the reason may be be that it is the improper paint for this task. Check the can's directions and see if this is the case.
