Z's gettin painted, how much?
 

Ok so i'm not big on posts here but I am going to send in my Z to get painted. The thing is I want to know and approximate price that others have paid for their car. It is going to be the same color and the door jams/engine bay doesn't need to be done. I am also going to send it into the shop ready to be sprayed, meaning already sanded and primed they just need to tape it off, wipe it down, and spray. Has anyone done this before? how much has it cost??

take it to your local shops and ask for estimates. they are usually free and you can get a good feel of how much it will cost. also, the prices varies from state to state so the answers that you are gonna get is close to useless.

What people on here have paid will have nothing to do with what you will pay. Price range for paint can go from a few hundred to a few thousand. Go get some estimates :dunno:

my guess, 1.5-2k

$8,954.28 to be exact, good thing you are not getting the door jams and engine bay or it would be a lot more expensive.

I paid 7k with door jams and everything painted. would of been 6k without door jams 10k with engine bay done.

paid 5000 here for PPG paint and clear with all jambs excluding engine bay with extra wetsanding.

ill go for some estimates next week, im hoping for $1500 and under considering i'm doing all the body work

depends on many factors

1. who does it
2. what they are using (material costs can vary tremendously, and different paint systems require different levels of pre and post paint work for completion, which plays right back into labor costs. The brand doesn't play into it. Just like Toyota has Scion, Toyota, and Lexus as different price points, so do paint manufacturers. Each maker has their own systems priced for different uses/clients, ranging from low budget to ultra high end. These systems are designed to give a complete setup for a shop to use, and ensures all the chemicals react correctly with one another, and are designed around different shop environments.

4. what is being done - i.e, some shops will not want to get involved in any job where they are not doing the bodywork as well, because the quality of your body work determines the ultimate success of their paint job.
4a. your level of expectation. A paint job that mimics what the car had when it was new is not all that difficult to reproduce, and for many, is not desirable (clear coat stinks, tons of orange peel all around the car). Higher end jobs that eliminate these flaws are labor intensive, and every hour costs $.


I don't think regional differences matter all that much anymore. Every area tends to have low, mid and high end body shops, and you'll tend to find pricing is similar across the board depending on the type of job being done. Some states may be a bit more due to environmental laws, etc, but I don't think it will represent a large portion of the total cost. Lots of guys also do side work at their houses/shops after hours and can offer you pricing breaks if you're willing to wait longer for the job to be done (and not have it backed by a shops warranty, etc). Can be a blessing, or a nightmare.

You can spend $1000, you can spend $10000 and I'm sure even more. Its really up to you to study the detailed quotes, and view examples of their finished products, to determine what you want. There are, without question, absolute differences between the quick single stage $1000 respray and the concours level $10000 + job. The cheaper jobs tend to require a lot more upkeep down the road to keep them looking even decent, the more expensive jobs (which use more expensive, involved systems with higher grade materials), tend to be far more resiliant to chips, scratching, marring, discoloration, oxidation, and tend to require much less up keep as time goes on.

thanks Z1, i have two body shops lined up that are friends of mine, which i believe will give me a good price, they both told me to finish the body work and then come back. I am just trying to get an idea for a price ahead of time so I know what i'm gettin into

for that much work i would expect to pay around 2-5k for paint, prep, and labor. and if you get a quote for less than $1,000 that means you went to maaco

I got my boy to put on my Greddy front bumper, Greddy sides, and Kenstyle rear on my G35 coupe will a fully painted body and top of the line clear coat for $2k plus the cost of materials. You really cant beat that.

As long as i have been around cars and classic cars and euro cars you name it its always been a true statement...you get what you pay for. I cant stress enough to walk around their shop and look at their finished products. If they turn your car around in a day they are not doing it right.

I had mine completely resprayed excluding engine bay for 4.5k.
I had bumpers, fenders, side skirts, mirrors, moldings, and emblems removed, dent removal, and all jams painted. sprayed with ppg and wet-sanded afterwards
