Replacing Splash Shield (ZSpeed or TBW)
Hey folks I thought I would ask what the preference is these days. I see it’s more or less one or the other when I search the forum. I have a new to me 350Z and I’m trying to pick up some parts that need to be replaced or are just missing. In this case my Splash Shield is not on the car and I read it’s important that it is. I researched both shields and I can get them both right now for about the same amount, and I think the preference is black so it blends well? please let me know your thoughts and experiences. I would like to order this week. So far I’m leaning to ZSpeed :) |
They are identical

I have the Z-Speed aluminum undershroud, and it is much better than the plastic shroud. I actually prefer the non-painted aluminum, because it makes it easier to inspect for leaks.
If your oem undershroud is missing someone may have removed it because of front bumper damage, etc.. causing the mounting holes to not line up with the shroud. This happen to me, but I was able to re-drill some holes that were not lining up, into the undershroud, as a temporary fix. So keep this in mind if you are installing it. |
I just installed one of the metal ones on my z, fit and quality was excellent. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Aluminum-En...3/151701536892 i also purchased a Engine Splash Shield Bolt Clips Hardware kit as I was missing everything. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Spla...QAAOSwB1Jas028 |
thanks folks... Chihuahuamaster I was thinking about that too... I will see when I try to mount one up... but could be true. Force-FedZ have you seen the ZSpeed one or did you just order one online and fit it up? Everything i read says they are pretty much the same (as stated above)... I am torn between them and unsure if I want black our aluminum color...
|
Z1 makes one also. The service panel for oil changes is larger. https://www.z1motorsports.com/aero-a...d-p-12133.html |
Man, I’m digging the Z1 panel. I’m going that route. Now black or aluminum color:) |
My aluminum panel is aluminum. The Z sits so low even at stock height that you can't see the panel.
|
That’s a good point. It’s not like it’s visible. I’ll give the Z1 panel a try. Thanks everyone one for helping me make my mind up. |

I did have to modify it because of the procharger intercooler mounts (drill two holes). |

Now black or aluminum color:) In hindsight, I should have gotten the black powder coated panel since you can see the shield through the grille opening of my V2 bumper, and black would have blended better with my Z since it's also black. Just something to think about if you don't have a stock front bumper. |
Hey, I got the Z1 under shroud, aluminum. It looks fantastic, and comes with all necessary hardware. As most of them, it has a back plate for maintenance.
But of course it couldn't be an easy install. One of the bolts under the radiator got broken. When removing the bolts (if you still have any), be gentle. Use PB Blaster, WD40, whatever makes you happy. Use anti seize. After so many tries with bolt removals and drilling, the bolt piece is still there. Will deal with it next spring. Br, Al |
Zspeed undershroud saved my oil pan after taking a piece of debris like a champ, so if nothing else I can attest to its durability and a must for a lowered car.
|
I use TBW, Jon lives across town from me. Great guy, great company it you can't go wrong with either. |
I ordered the Z1 splash shield. Should be in tomorrow or the next day. I’ll post pics once I have ti e to put it on. I like the fact that you can drop the back half to change oil and inspect stuff. Time will tell if I made a good choice. |
My Z1 splash shield came in. I’ll be installing one day this week... Who ever has done this install before can you tell me how long it took and did you just jack up a corner to get to the bottom? pics will follow. |
Get the whole front end up...and 15-20, maybe 30 taking your time
|
Thanks! |
Ok so this instal was a pain :) my fender liners would not line up for the two bolts on each side. I fought it for an hour and decided to give in, the rest was more or less a direct bolt on, I could see my bumper may of been very slightly sagging too (no shield on it for who knows how long) but after it’s all nice and tight. All in all I like it. And I’m glad I have something back on it. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....83b084fcb.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....de3c42d70.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....55fde2b77.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....d0590d8e2.jpeg |
Looks good! Do you think the issue with the fender liners not lining up was due to some type of deformation with the liners themselves, or the hole locations in the shield?
Also, it appears you just need to undo two bolts to have the service panel swing down. That will be nice when it's oil change time! |
Unsure on the liners, I think they are slightly deformed due to the way the PO installed the CF lip. The holes I think are perfect, as is everything in the panel. Yes on the two bolts, that’s why I thought I’d try it. It will be nice to have full access to the back half. |
I'd like to know how high the car needs to be jacked up to swing the service panel down and remove it.
If the tires were just a couple inches off the ground, would that be high enough? Also, can you comment on the fitment of the joint between the main panel and the service panel. Could it be sort of rattly or is it somehow secured or in enough of a bind (for the lack of a better term) to keep it solid and quiet? Bryan |
Uncle_B, I will test the access panel out this weekend (I had it up ramps and it had plenty of room - Unsure of the minimum amount to get it open)... I will say this, if it were any lower than what I had it,I couldn't fit under the car any way... so all depends on what your after. As far as the hinge area for the access door... where it inserts into the panel it seemed plenty tight to me, I had same concern... I tapped it a bit with my hand and didnt see any concerns... Thinking it will be fine... but time will tell.

Does anyone know if the TBW undershroud will fit the Zspeed extension panel for NISMO V3 bumpers? |

Bryan ok so I took some time while on my lunch and decided to check so e if this out for you. 1. If I tap all around the panel I can get a few spots to rattle, it’s faint and I can’t say you would hear it if you were not right next to the panel... I guess you could do something to sound deaden it from the top side if it were audible? I’m not doing anything because I don’t think it’s a concern. 2. On the access panel, I am unsure of the minimum amount to lift the car to open the door. I had intended to measure the door once I opened it but my lunch seemed a bit rushed and I forgot to do it. But just so you know, the access door slides off, it’s not a hinge it’s slotted and you just remove it. So even if it were only a few inches off the ground you can remove the two bolts and slide it off. Omg myrddin, thanks for checking that out for us.
The extra pics really show how much more access there is with the Z1 shield. I'm sold. My splash shield is beat to s**t and needs to be replaced anyway :thumbup2: |
no problem buddy... |
