Default Check engine light on, car takes forever to switch gears

The subject is pretty clear my check engine light turned on and now it's taking forever to switch gears (it's a automatic) my initial thought is the transmission oil but I just wanted to get someone else's opinion before I do something to the car

You (or have someone) pull the DTCs to see why the CEL is lit?

These are Z cars, not Teslas where we can do a remote diag yet. Laff.

To add onto Mic's valuable suggestions, if the CEL pushed you into limp mode, there's no way the tranny will shift much. Limp mode is designed to prevent big engine damage and won't let the engine rev past 2K.

Since it's an automatic; how were you driving it before this happened? It will do this if the transmission was running hot.
