Who's running Vortech with bigger cams ?

I need to talk to someone thats running bigger cams with the Vortech SC . Would like to talk about ...Idle , BOV , fuel map , and vacuum . Would save me alot of time figuring it out . PM me please
Thanks Bill

Bill, click on my sig, call the number and ask for Rob. He has built two cars with Vortech + JWT cams. He will be installing mine in two weeks.

Lou.....Are you putting in larger injectors also ?

LOU Jan 24, 2005 07:20 PM

Yes, but i am using Bosch injectors instead of RC.

booger Jan 25, 2005 07:06 AM

Do you already have the injector installed ? What size ?

mcduck Jan 25, 2005 08:16 AM

Bill, I've been running the Vortech with Nismo cams since day 1

Idle must be bumped up 100-150rpm (I think this will apply to any aftermarket cam, not just Nismos) Idle is pretty smooth... just a hint of the cam is noticeable.

BOV does not need to be adjusted unless you want to change the amount of pressure you "hold". We did not adjust mine for several months until I decided I wanted to eliminate some of the "Cruise Whistle" sound.

Maps... can't really say without jacking in for this. Pretty sure the map was affected because I was seeing my boost come up earlier. So you would have to adjust accordingly. Basically all your cells will shift a position or two earlier on the RPM axis if I remember the table layout correctly. Again, only if the cams affect the boost. My car had the Vortech installed with cams, headers, and plenum already on it. So any one or combination of those things could have been affecting my boost.

Vacuum... one of the things I've been meaning to take a closer look at. To date, we have made no adjustments to anything vacuum related.

Larger Injectors... I did not require larger injectors and we hit 425rwhp (finally found the dyno with those numbers!). HOWEVER, I'm sure at WOT, my injectors are fully taxed. If you hit 400+, it is in your best interest to do an injector upgrade. It's one of the things I'm considering later this year. 440 injectors should be enough for the Vortech unless you are going into the bottom end.

Hope that helps

Bill, the injectors will go in around mid-February with the cams and fuel return system. I will be going with whatever Bosch injector is equivalent to the RC 550. I don't want to go smaller because eventually I plan to run more boost and get the car around 600rwhp on a built bottom end.

Thanks guys...The biggest problem Im having is at [ -1 to 0 ] vacuum , at different throttle positions .When I scaled the injectors back , I had 9.2 in the vacuum side of the fuel map , and went down .1 ......at a time , ran the car to let the ECU adjust . I did this till I got to 8.8 . Then ECU wouldnt adjust at 8.8 any more so I went back up .1 at a time till I got to 9.1
The Bov was closing at like -4 in. of vacuum and Im only getting -6in. of vacuum at idle . Ive since adjusted it almost all the way out . So the problem is that the A/F is jumping all around because Im at 0 in. of vacuum alot , at different rpm 's and diffent throttle positions .It can go from real lean to off the gauge rich when at -0 vacuumm .
I guess once I get enough miles on it to go WOT I'll be able to tune it better . I think I'll go have the dealer bump the idle 50 more rpm to 800 and have them do the Air/Idle learning procedure .

LouZer......I would love to see your maps once the tuner is done with them . I think He'll run into the same problems as I am seeing and we should end up with a simular fuel map on the vacuum side....Bill

Hopefully not. I will let you know when it is done.

Not that its unsolvable , just he is going to see the same thing I am . Right now its just a little hard starting and runs ruff at idle .

My tuner AAM insisted that I upgrade my injectors - said stock ones are maxed out, A/F jumps up there at 6k, not enough fuel. I'll probably be getting the PE 510cc injectors real soon. Also, my idle sometimes is a problem. If i rev up at idle, sometimes car will just shut off, so I need to get the idel raised as well. I also have similar plans as LouZer. I wanna upgrade the internals in the summer, strap on the 2.87 pulley and go for more boost...although i dont know if I'll be shooting for as much power as LouZer, or even if that is capable. Im thinking maybe 520rwhp at the most. We'll have to wait and see....

LOU Jan 25, 2005 11:23 PM

600rwhp is definitely possible with the Vortech... it may just need a little help from an intercooler chiller. My tuner made 501rwhp with the Vortech, 2.87pulley, JWT cams and NX intercooler chiller. And this was all done on a stock bottom end.

There are three Vortech cars out here running over 415rwhp with stock internals and the 2.87 pulley. The car that made 501 with the intercooler chiller made 435rwhp without it.

With the 2.62 pulley and an upgraded blower I am hoping 600rwhp is possible without the intercooler chiller.

And please don't argue with me... a guy can dream can't he!?

booger Jan 26, 2005 04:34 AM

After the break in....tuning...and retuning the 2.87 pulley . What ever I end up with , is what I end up with and Im going to be happy . There is a Co2 chiller that looks interesting for the summer at the track

LOU Jan 26, 2005 06:28 AM

It will definitely do wonders for your intake temps.

and at least 1 that has run 425rwhp on the stock 3.33" pulley and has been problem free (except for a minor FMU rebuild) for over 15K miles on the Vortech!

Kudos to Mark over at CHL Motorsports in Charlotte for doing such a great job on my Z! Those in the Charlotte area can see my car on display at CHL Motorsports for the next few weeks as it awaits a few minor upgrades. :D

600whp...yeah maybe 2.62 and upgrading the blower and a chiller...post your dyno when you have it and then I'll believe you
