What's the truth about aps TT and test pipes?
I am too the point where I am reinstalling the test pipes/stock cats on my aps TT install. Peter warns me that the boost levels will be too high if running test pipes on the out of box tune. I won't be able to get a tune until Oct (too much work) since my closest unichip tuner is 6 hrs away. I have a wideband o2 that I am going to run with my test pipes, however if I go the route of reinstalling the stock cats, I won't have the bung for the wideband.
For those of you that are running the aps TT with test pipes on an out of box tune, what boost levels are you hitting? |
Zivman,
I really don't think you'll run into any real issue's because the 91 octane stock map is very rich. Which exhaust do you have? Tuan |
I asked Peter if I'd be okay until I got it tuned, and he said it would be fine but advised me not to really get on it. He didn't ask which octane map I was using.
If I were you I'd ditch the o2 sensor for now and install the stock cats till you get it tuned, just to be safe. You shouldn't need the sensor anyway for stock tune. |

I am in the same boat...can't get tuned for a few weeks...running APS test pipes and the Injen exhaust. Boost was peaking over 10 PSI :icon28: Definitely enough to scare me (and I don't have my wideband hooked up just yet either). So I am installing the stock cats back in the car for now until I can tune.

I have the TT GRD installed 93 octane map.I told them my mods which was exhaust and H/F cats.My a/f was 10/1 on the dyno.My point is I changed out the cats to test pipes to lean out the car a littleand it didn't according to my wideband o2 there is no change in a/f.But the response of the car is nite and day.Like tuan said I don't think you should have a problem. If you have a wideband and a empty road it should tell you whats going onand be relitively safe.Good luck with yor kits.

I have test pipes and boost is hitting between 10.2 and 10.3 and the highest point (not consistently though) But I have a safe a/f ratio as well, not too worried about it.

I am fairly certain you will be fine. Datalog with a wideband what your A/F looks like and post it up for us. Tuan |
I'm running my APS TT w/ test pipes and I get about 9psi-10psi constantly if I get on it. Runs very very rich

you guys running test pipes with the APS TT, how loud is it? Do you have any rasp?
I know it sounds like a redundant question, but from what I've heard a TT is quieter than stock and test pipes bring it back up to normal sound levels so I'm wondering if there isn't as much rasp because it's supposivly quieter? captj3, how much of a power difference is there from hi flow cats and test pipes on the APS TT? sorry if this is off topic |
Not loud at all, and I have the loud *** nismo exhaust that was obnoxious before the turbo. I'm not getting any rasp but I have gutted RT cats, from what I've seen people are getting an additional 15hp-20hp with test pipes.
I actually almost miss how the engine used to rev n/a but hearing the turbo's spool up is completely worth it. Do you guys get strange looks when other people hear your turbos and BOV? |

Tuan I hear you are the guy to talk to when it comes to tunning these kits :icon38:, so I am glad you say it 'should' be alright. What about timing? Should I be concerned about the timing setup on the out of box tune if I am hitting a pound or two higher boost? I am thinking that since I can run 92/93 oct fuel that I will be making up some of the 'tune' with that. I also went with the PLFR6A-11 plugs (one step colder). Will this make any difference? |
I haven't redynoed yet so I can't say for sure but my installer feels I got at least 20hp more.

With the Xerd testpipes and custom single HKS Ti muffler, theres a nasty rasp between 2.9-3.3k RPM's.
|
No rasp with mine APS TT Injen straight-tip exhaust.

Tonio, is the Nismo exhaust ok to run with the Turbo setups? I'm looking purchase something like that. I guess as long as there is a good Y-pipe you're ok? Since its a TT, would it be more benificial to go true dual? Thanks for the advice everyone. What if I go ST..would nismo be ok?
Sorry to go OT on you Ziv. |
there's quite a bit more room for a turbo to breath with a dual 2.5" setup vs a single 3" Y pipe
using pie*r^2, 7.065" area of pipe on the 3" single pipe nismo vs 9.8125" on a dual 2.5 pipe exhaust stock = 4.90625" I'd guess that the nismo isn't as good of an exhaust for insane high hp numbers as a dual 2.5, but still much better than stock |
Thanks for a math based response. I understand things better that way. Furhter, would you say anything greater than dual 2.5" would be counterproductive under 450 rwhp?

Does anyone test how much boost get with test pipes and stock exhasut ?
