What kind of power / setup is needed to get into the 10's?

I know MRC has got a car doing 11.60 w/ APS TT, not sure how much power its putting out. What kind of power is needed to get below 11.0 sec? 500hp? more? less?

Brandon@Forged Jul 10, 2005 03:40 PM

Full drag? Probably only ~530rwhp.

uplz4588 Jul 10, 2005 04:00 PM

good power ~500-550whp + slicks

Dirty Dave Jul 10, 2005 05:05 PM

It only takes 550 whp to break into high 10's with slicks ??? In that case I cant wait to get my car back !!!

Wow, still looking at built motor territory... Thanks.

:Crosses finger: I hope to be the first G35 in the 10's. But with DR's.

Honestly it depends on your driving skills. If your a great driver you might be able to get it @ 500-550rwhp, if your driving skills aren't that good than you might need 600+rwhp. So the best thing is to practice the launching before you go out and and set a goal on how much hp you need.

imoz Jul 10, 2005 05:52 PM

Yeah, it also sounds like traction/launch quality is a big part of it with the Z. I was mainly interested as another data point as I make a decision what I want to do with my Z and whether I want to make the investment in FI, and if so how much of an investment. I've also been considering buying another car to trick out, maybe one already boosted from the factory like an MR-2 Turbo etc. I already tried this with an old BMW e30 but it blew up and I lost interest after spending 4 months wrenching on it myself. When I look at the total cost involved in FI on the Z, I have a hard time deciding whether to do that or look at buying a Motorex'd Skyline for $25-35k.

Traction and short gears is your biggest issue on the Z. You will need alot of power, and alot of traction. I assume you would need a very good LSD, full slicks as well as ~550whp. 10 seconds on any car is fast. If you can get a Motorex'd Skyline that cheap, I would look at doing that. BTW, to get an MR2 into the 10's, you are goint to need some serious mods. I know a guy who only builds MR2's and he has NOS, upgraded turbos, and built motor, and is running low 11's on slicks.

Brandon@Forged Jul 11, 2005 06:16 AM

A Motorex'd Skyline would be hard to come by since they are out of business now. If you are looking for a Skyline, i'd check out RB Motoring.

imoz Jul 11, 2005 05:34 PM

Yeah, I've been reading up on the Motorex issues etc. Just another option I've been throwing around in my head. The reason I started thinking about something like an MR-2 Turbo or things like an Eclipse GSX, Evo, WRX etc. is that I perceive them to be less expensive and/or easier to build up although I have no real facts to back that up and don't really know. The Skyline thought (as well as 911 and some other cars) popped into my head as out-of-the-box options. If I'm going to do a TT setup, then I'm going to want to go all the way and do a built motor. I'm just not sure how I would work that logistically at the moment as the Z is currently my only car as I sold my other project car. I have to do more research, my mind is all over the place.

Haha, I'm looking for 10s in my G35 with my APS TT kit, The car should up and running in two weeks :)

Just have to find some tires now....

IMO, it's better to own a shop or something if you want consistent 10's on a car like this. It's going to need constant attention.

phunk Jul 11, 2005 08:41 PM

get an EVO and take it to AMS in Chicago... they have a package that is I think 16 grand installed to run 10s on stock engine. They know what they are doing with those things.

Or buy another car.... :)

Really if I wanted all out performance I would buy something else, I just like the way the Z looks.

nissansource Jul 11, 2005 10:08 PM

Um... a VQ35 shouldnt be a problem to get into 9-10sec land. Built to the hilt and own your own shop b/c yes the car will need WEEKLY wrenching
