I don't understand?
I have been told that the Greddy turbo chargers are Street Legal but not CARB legal what is the difference?
|
CARB is the California Air Resources Board who's approval means that the device meets strict pollution standards. Street legal is a whole 'nuther set of regulations which probably have more to do with state law than California's. The fed's do have many pollution standards too.

Thanks, Im trying to find out if a CARB certified or Street Legal Turbo is ok to have in New Jersey.
|
street legal means that when whoever plugs their obd2 reader into your car, no codes will come up. in delaware, the newer cars don't do a sniffer test, they just plug into your computer. no codes, you pass. you should be okay in jersey as long as you don't get too wild with the motor. there are quite a few turbo kits out there that don't pop codes.

Its illegal to touch your cats prior to 50K miles..and you can only replace w/ oem cats... its illegal to change your engine.. it is illegal to change your A/F ratio unless a dealership does it for you... many things are illegal...anything that has to do with your fuel lines is illegal... its a matter of whether or not you can get away with it that makes it "street legal". I can have a 800hp street legal supra, yet i doubt its legal. If its not outrageous like a turbo sticking out of ur hood, and its not INSANELY loud like..92+dB...and its not obvious that your missing a cat (black or brown smoke at idle)..ull be fine. U won't pass inspection tho. In that case, make some friends :)

:icon20: That's what's frustrating about living in California. When they say it's "Street Legal", it usually means that it's legal in every state exept Ca. There are no California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved FI except for the Stillen SC, and I'm not about to ruin the perfect lines of my Z by putting on a humped up hood to accomodate the SC.
All the other SC's and Turbos claim to be pending CARB approval. That means NOTHING!!. Though I live in Ca, I am looking into the HKS Rotrex SC. Can anyone give me info on wether the HKS Rotrex SC is worth getting? |
