1/2" head studs have been the talk of the town recently, we have been testing and working on a half inch head stud upgrade that we will include with one of our longblock or shortblock options...

The process of precisely installing the head studs is not easy, the process requires certain tooling and know-how that we now have perfected on our test block and 3 other motors

One of the tests performed was to see if we could break something with torquing a torque plate down to 185ft lbs (this is as much as we could turn the wrench )...it held strong (but deformed our torque plate )



I have always liked to see pictures of talked about products, so I provided several...to compare the stock sized studs (9.5mm at the waist) to the 1/2"studs (12.7mm at the waist)



The blocks are precisely drilled/tapped/countersunk, and then timeserts are installed:

The 1/2 inch head stud option (installed in a BuiltZmotor) will be a $800 upgrade...

For the month of June, any orders that are placed for a longblock or shortblock with 1/2" head studs will be included for an additional cost of ONLY $500 (for the mathematically impaired : $300 off!!!)

We wanted to make sure we had the technique of installation perfected before we announced it (that's just how we operate- work out any bugs first before we begin selling to the public), I have a full time job so I can't work on the R&D for 20 hours straight like you

We will not be selling any stud kits, as we do not sell any parts, we just build quality motors (so this is an UPGRADE we offer on our motors)

Side note: I can almost guarantee that MOST machine shops will not be too excited to install the oversized studs (it almost necesitates a junk block to test a few things on before going through with the actual install)...and if a machine shop does feel comfortable doing this job, it will cost much more than anticipated...I got a few quotes here locally and from Sharif in his North Carolina area... $600+ seems to be the norm

Can this work be done on a fully assembled short block? What about the heads, can you do it with the valvetrain still installed? If it has to be broken down, I'll just wait until I can afford to sleeve the block and pay the extra $300

It can, but rather not...we install the timeserts as the very first step in the machining...then the block is cleaned, then honed and resurfaced, then cleaned again...

just wait until the bare block can be machined properly and we can get it done when you are ready

Sorry to pull up an old thread, but I am confused. On the pick that says "stock" it shows head studs, but I just pulled my motor yesturday and I have headbolts and not studs. This is on an 05 Revup motor. What gives?

If i had the money for a twin turbo with a built motor (even the leanest built motor, head studs, some cams, rods and pistons) and greddy TT, i'd be retarded to be thinking about trading my Z for an STi or EVO!

I think the OP is refering to the stock size ARP head studs. Unless your looking at making over 600whp ARP "L19" stock size head studs are more than adequate.

Correct, the standard EOM device implied that clamps the cyinder head to the block is a head bolt..ARP makes a stud that provides greater clamping force...ARP also makes the same size stud in L19 material allowing greater torque, the limiting factor here is the fact that the stud is threaded into the aluminum block...with our original testing we showed the aluminum thread fail right around 100ft lbs of tq...

The 1/2" arp head studs are a much larger diameter, providing greater surface clamping area..in addition, the blocks are machined and fitted with timeserts. These STEEL inserts replace the aluminum threads with steel threads, making a much safer/stronger anchor for the head stud. The 1/2" head studs are then torqued to 100ft lbs, without any risk of stripping the block threads...we have tested the timeserts to over 185 ft lbs of tq, without any failures

IMHO, if one is venturing over 500rwhp, it is definately wise to upgrade the headstuds... The 1/2" head studs will support power goals up to 800+hp
