6mt 3rd gear not worky- here's why!
well, 2 trannys later, after breaking 3rd gear both times (when 3rd gear engaged engine revs freely), we decided to pull one apart and see if we could spot the issue...
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...d/IMG_7311.jpg as we pulled the tranny apart, we saw specs of copper colored metal, small ammount, in the case...hmmm....:icon20: edit: this is the 3rd counter gear, it has split apart....:icon20: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...d/IMG_7317.jpg now see how it has broken free from the larger gear ring, these are designed to be one solid piece, so when the larger ring is engaged with the coupling sleeve, 3rd gear is not!!! http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ountergear.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...d/IMG_7316.jpg now I'm very curious as to the puerto rico welding fix?!?!?!?..where do you weld, the seam that "could" be welded would likely get in the way of where the gears mate on each shaft...someone please enlighten me:D http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...d/IMG_7319.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...d/IMG_7320.jpg before you ask, no i didnt weld it....just posing |
This is the funniest thread ever...hehe...nice work.

The weld alone won't hold. You have to super-glue it first.
|
Dude just weld it! Do it!
|
I would have to assume you are NOT going to use the wire feed.. You are going to have to take another approach.. ;)

i have taken apart transfer cases on my rock crawler before, so i was a bit prepared, wasnt that bad all things considered... just need some puinches, snap ring pliers, and to actually get the two gear shafts seperated, you will need a puller... YOU CAN DO IT! |
Not sure if this helps or not....
|
It's the engagement gear that breaks off of the main gear. This is going to be really hard to fix without a fully custom gear that has the engagement gear laser welded onto it. |

just got off the phone with nissan 3rd gear $160 UPDATE: I studied the diagrams and compared them to what is sitting on my workbench... the part that broke is the "3rd counter gear" http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ountergear.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...d/IMG_7316.jpg Now that is a great illustration!:D :D :D maybe rebuilding with a new counter gear that has been cryoed and prayed over by monks??? |
