Looks like a job for Daniel + tape measure? I have no clue man. Don't know the specs on the "revised" version or the one you're currently running. All I know is I want a huge MF'er.

I guess not Daniel. It would help me out too since I'll need to look into what kind of IC I can get that'd fit with the piping... I'll probably have to modify the piping anyways because of how wide of an IC I want to run.

Turbo Upgrade Paths

I need some experts to chime in on this.

Out of the box, these STS kits come with a Garrett TO4E60 O Trim .58 AR housing turbo. I have no idea what the typical spool characteristics of this unit are, and what the optimal HP range is, nor do I have any idea how to read compressor maps to figure it out.

My question is if efficiency of this whole system can be improved by changing the turbo to one of the following options:

60trim-O-Trim Ball Bearing CHRA (Center Housing Rotating Assembly)
GT35-55
GT35-61

Please reply with any helpful insight.

I need some good info on these turbos...

I'm being offered 3 different turbos and I don't know which one to go with. I'm siding with the 60-1 which is a $400 upgraded turbo. The regular TO4E60 will spool the quickest? Any further upgrade in the turbo will lag a bit more since the compressor is bigger?

The upgrade from 60-1 to the GT35 costs: $0

My only fear is that I'm gonna be so top end that I'm gonna hate it for daily driving pep. That would clear alot of the traction issue when launching since I won't have the low end power... but then again I probably won't have much a problem with traction at all being 4200 lbs and AWD... advice?!?!? I've already paid for the kit with upgraded turbo, now I choose between 60-1 and GT35 before it's shipped...

Does your guys' pressure drop occur at different rpms in different gears?

I was going to PM you and ask you if your TP did help you spool better on 1st Gear, did you increase your PSI on 1st?

Now to answer your question, I only boost around 4lbs on 1st gear so no drop there (Light FW made it worst) on 2nd I hit around 6-7lbs and that seem to be stable too until redline, on 3rd I hit my full boost 8lbs but that seem to drop on the upper RPM (5000+) these are all straight shifting 1st-3rd. I only experience boost drop at 3rd+ gear and always after I hit 8lbs or close to that.

So the IC is what is keeping the kit from going past 8psi?

Well, Rick said that the IC is already on the restricted side at 8+psi but Goose experience spike to 9psi and even 12psi. I'm not sure if this is also the way my boost map was setup in Utec, I guess the only way is to swap my IC but I'm doing the bumper first since that is the one that really affect the over all power (I have a stock G35 bumper ).

Oh, even with the spike even Goose get over 1.x lbs of boost drop from peak psi by 6000+rpm, not sure if that is the case after his heatwrap.

Wow I was a night on the couch away (from the wife) from ordering the STS. I am glad you all our doing some serioud R&D work. I had to post to stay updated on this topic. I am stuck between this kit and the Stillen. No need to get off topic on why thats even a comparison, but my driving habits mandate that I buy something that is limited or hard to upgrade. LOL.

Thanks for the info in this thread...good stuff.

Hmm I guess I will see when the turbo gets to forged. It took 4 days for sts to reply to me and let me know where my turbo was ... From the sound of all this boost spike I should def. get a boost gauge?

its not a boost spike really its a boost drop that we are experiencing. While others are saying they experience it all the way to redline i am experiencing it at about 4k - 5k and then it goes back up for me

Goose had a boost spike up to 12 because he did a Heat wrap and that I guess made his spool a little unpredictable, he already had his car retuned so he's good to go. I do experience a boost creep up to 8.5psi especially on higher gears but that is normal, I haven't yet to see my boost hit 9psi with all the logging I did and the highest is 8.6psi

hhhmmm, that is strange, you think your EBC has something to do with it?

I don't know if it does or not probably so because as soon as it bottoms out it starts to build back up again. Like I said I could use the ebc to tune this problem out with the rpm dependent boost settings but it happens at different points in third and fourth gear. 2nd gear builds boost all the way to the redline and 1st goes by so fast that i haven't even really got a chance to note what happens with that yet.

One thing that would have really helped the kits potential and dropped intake temps more if the IC is the restriction would have been a vertical core intercooler similar to that found on the original Vortech and ATI SC kits. Short rows but more of them will out flow long rows but fewer and offer better cooling (if it is baffled inside) because there is less pressure loss due to time in the core rows but the air is divided into more areas with a higher delta in temperature.

Well I haven't actually got my car back from the shop yet. There's been a couple of hiccups in the VB shipping process and I've lost about 5 full days of down time. hopefully it will be ready to go next week.
