Vortech problems but different from most current ones.
 

This morning I noticed that the Vortech was making a kind of rattling noise that it had not made before. The kit has been on the car for about 2 years now so, I have become accustomed to its noises and this was not normal. I popped the hood and the noise is definitely coming from the jackshaft. One thing that I noticed is that I am about to turn the cog side about 2 degrees of rotation but the front pulley does not move. I contacted Vortech and they said that they assembly is a solid shaft and should not be doing this. So I have either 1) snapper the shaft which is highly unlikely or 2) the cog pulley is loose on the shaft. Has anyone run into this type of problem or have any ideas?

maybe the wooddruff key is worn in the pulley. that would be odd thought.

Maybe take off the cog belt and loosen the serp belt and see if the pulleys on the jackshaft turn equally.

If not, you can take apart the assembly. It's pretty straight forward, but it takes some time. The shaft does not have much inside it besides two bearings and a part that they are pressed against. I'm sure you can determine what is causing it.

I would suggest not to mess with any of the pullies. If you mess with any of the pullies and break the seal, your warranty will be voided. Contact Vortech to see if they can replace this under their warranty.

Actually the kit is over 3 years old so, I doubt that the warranty still appllies. I am probably going to just buy a whole new jackshaft assembly. Unbolt the old one and bolt in the new one. I need to replace the belt anyhow. I am not certain what is involved in just replacing the bearings.

UPDATE: Problem solved.

I finally got around to taking a look at this since I have been out of town for the holidays. I removed the front pulley bolt and the key had worked its way out of the keyway in the jackshaft. This caused alot of play between the pulley and the shaft and that was causing the noise. I just realigned the keyways in the shaft and pulley and tapped the key back in place. Sound is gone. The pulley keyway is a little chewed up so I may just get a new pulley and key. Vendors?????

Those of us with the recent install/KERBLAMMO/re-install experiences appreciate any additional info regarding 'funny noises' from our Vortechs (especially when it is a relatively simple fix, like this).:)

I will always try to follow up on any "problem" threads that I create. I think of these forums and a knowledgebase, rather than a "place to just post".
