Hi guys, I'm new to this site and I don't yet have a 350z. Short version of my story...I've always wanted a badass fast tuner, but every car I've ever had has been a front wheel drive, so not much I can do there. I've also always loved drifting and it's pretty much impossible to do with a FWD. Im by no means ignorant to racing or drifting. Anyways, I've come to the decision that I want to buy a 350z. It's always been one of my favorite cars, and having a stock 6 speed manual transmission and over 300hp stock is a nice place to start.
So here's my question to your guys. I've been doing some research on putting a turbo system in a 350z and I've gotten pretty familiar with the parts involved and the costs of installing the complete system. But I've been seeing posts where people are saying it's not good to put in a turbo system in a used car with over 50k miles. I know that a turbo is a lot more maintenance than a supercharger, but I just think a turbo is the better way to go for more hp. So I'm looking at used 350z's but most of them have over 100k miles. So, if I do everything right, and spend some decent money (between $12k-$15k) will my car blow up after 20-50k miles or will it last as long as I take care of it?

first of all, mileage doesnt, its the compression. get a compression test.
for 12-15k youre looking at a use kit. the thing with turbos is that they will need the turbine rebuilt at some stage. the more used and abuse, the sooner that will be. 10k miles on a turbo is different than say 30k miles.
will your car blow up? that depends on your luck. guys have blown their car at 350hp, others have pushed 5-600 just fine. its all in the tune.
if youre buying a 350 to try and get the fastest 1/4 time, stop there. the z was not meant to go fast in the 1/4, member have trouble breaking 11s with high power. the car just cant hook.
as far as drifting it, save it for the track, dont ever attempt it on the streets.

Word.
It's ALWAYS going to be better with a teardown and baseline of the internals. Whether that be full sleeves, low compression pistons, balancing, valve job, cam timing, etc. OR just a stock rebuild, your baseline engine will serve you well so long as you mind its care.
Like T'bo said, hard to say whether or not something's going to go awry. There was a thread just within the last week about someone's FI motor going south with UNDER 500 miles. Then there are the people with twins or S/C setups pushing 100k+
And don't forget all the supporting mods....

Mileage doesn't matter, within reason. What does matter is the health of the engine. As long as it has been maintained well, it should be fine.
Compression test would probably be the only thing you need.
See my sig and then see that the engine had more than your 50K (I wont say how much more, but it'd blow your mind) (no pun intended) and it was at +600whp for 2 years, ran flawlessly.
As for that, I would advise on getting an HR if you are looking to go FI. Healthy stock HRs are capable of near 600s we are finding out now.
What's needed to be reliable beyond a healthy motor is a good tuner who can give you an optimal tune, appropriate maintenance, oil changes, etc and little things like supporting mods.
Also lastly, don't cut corners going FI, if you want the best experience. If you don't have the $$$ for quality parts, don't bother.

Hey guys I just going to jump in here real quick for some advice. I have an 03,track 350z, with a vortech v3sci kit making 503whp and 435tq at 13 psi, with a basic bottom end rebuild. 8.1 pistons, Eagle rods, L19's, acl bearings..the heads are stock but cleaned and such during the rebuild. Running jwt clucth/FW combo, 650cc Injectors, cjm stg2 fuel system, methanol system, treadstone 1200hp intercooler, etc... I am going to sell the vortech kit, methanol kit, and my long tube headers. I was.planning on replacing it all with 1200cc injectors, swap to e85, use walbro 485 fuel pump and slap on a mid mount comp turbo ct2x-6265. Will use 370 headers since they are equal length, throw on the 3.3 pumpkin, and fab the hot and cold piping while using tial wg and bov. The turbo is a 700hp rated turbo so should put me in the 600whp range with these supporting mods right? Anyone recommend anything else I'd need to do while making this swap? Do the heads need any work? Greatly appreciate the feedback and advice. Sorry it's a lot to read, didn't want to leave out important stuff. What is the reasoning behind selling the meth kit and the headers? I suppose with e85, meth isnt necessary, but im just wondering. IDK what the top end of that clutch will hold, but thats worth looking into as well. What are you tuning with?

I'd like to sell the meth kit with the vortech kit cause the bung is already welded in the pipe by the throttle body for it.

Idont veen have the stocke headres anymore cause they were replaced with the OBX long tubes.

Better comparison would be the CT4X 6262 , triple bearing and .82 AR , 71mm trim wheel.
CT4X comes with the anti-surge compressor housing and 4" inlet, 2.5" outlet which is what Precision runs in their ported cover version.
Precision's 6262 has 76mm turbine wheel as a reference. Comp and others have claimed their larger wheels spool just as fast/faster so I'd go with the most compatible trim as possible. Just my opinion though, Im not an expert.

I am a Noob to the blooging tuner thing but not neccessarily a noob , definitely good reading and information here , leaning in direction of Turbo boosting due to all the nightmares about bad seals on vortech blower

But I have about 50,000 mile on my Vortech. The rear seal did start spitting oil about 3,000 miles ago , it was very miner. and very easy replacement.
No nightmare here......

havent seen that kit too much last few years...Id do a single front / mid-mount, then a twin, before I did a rear mount. Every kit has it's pros and cons ... almost personal preference.
