Haltech Platinum vs. AEM EMS Universal
Hello everyone,
I am currently looking at two of these EMS's as they are in my price range. I know that the Haltech is PNP. and uses an on-board map sensor till around 22psi. but my tuner has suggested AEM. we deal with AEM's engineer "Mitch" who has tuned the Rockstar/AEM drift 350z. and also has successfully made the first PnP EMS for the new late STI. stock with exhaust mods 300awhp.
but looking into the AEM I know there is something that cant be controlled on the VVT where a tooth needs to be shaved for the AEM to run it. but a nice feature that Mitch has been able to do control boost via a solenoid on the AEM which is nice.
And since Mitch has tuned the AEM drift car, i could used that made with adjustment done. so less tuning time. my tuner told me to think about it.
my can is a 03'. and I have been running my current set-up CEL free since day one. and would like to remine that way.
So i am currently needing help on this decision guys.

There is no comparison in my opinion. While AEM is acceptable for use on many vehicles out there, it simply is not up to par in the 350Z EMS world and would be one of my last resort ecus on a Z. There are plenty of strong platforms out there, but since you spoke of the Haltech I will address it. First of all, the Platinum is plug and play. It requires no wiring, and more importantly it uses all of the factory sensors. No need to pull cams out and shave teeth, sync issues, etc.
When it comes to features you describe, the Haltech is going to do everything you list plus more features that the AEM can not due. Haltech has the ability to control boost, variable cam timing (in degrees, no "pulse width" where you are guessing). Haltech also reads in your factory CAN system, so you can do advanced functions like boost-by-speed or retard timing based on wheel slip (calculated from the individual wheel speed channels monitored from the oem CAN).
For ease/quickness of tuning I can provide a base map that will put you well on your way. There are many people on this forum that will vouch for this, some even run around on these maps (though I highly advise you dynotune it your specific application). The software is incredible, and any competent tuner will have no problem with it (and likely even fall in love with it..).

op... if you were talking of haltech vs vpro vs proefi i can see a dilema as to which ems you would get. How ever with the choices you mentioned... its ovbious... AEM ems is simply not going to cut it. IT helped supras big time when it came out but aem never developed it further. So based on your thread title That gives you 1 option

reason why I did this, is also my tuner is super familiar with haltech, so trouble shooting would be a breeze with him. but maybe I should get the haltech in advance and run in on my current set-up that is problem free.
is there software that can be downloaded to familiar myself with its interface? I used to run AEM on my 2jz before.

Hands down..no questions asked..Haltech. Even if AEM made a factory supported PnP unit, it would pale in comparison to the Haltech. We've tuned a bunch of Evo's with AEM...and each time I use it, it reminds me of how much more I like the Haltech's interface and capability.

I know SP (who is one of the AEM god's too) had to do a lot of work to get it to run on their 350Z last year.....they have ditched it for the Pro-EFI.
I'd look at Pro-EFI 48, Haltech, F-con as the options right now.

how about "real time tuning" is it fast?
I am running the SS box now, and I dont know if I should continue to run the same set-up on my car now with the built engine for around 1000 miles as break in. and then switch to Haltech.
but also, how good is the resolutions of the maps, as in for rpm range. to tweak every possible range

Yes, you are allowed up to 32 rows and 32 columns, and they can be at whatever break points you like. Also, it automatically interpolates the correct values for cells if you need to add an extra row or column while tuning. Works exactly like you would want it to - infact, it spoils the tuner.

Post start works exceptionally well. Between that, prime (initial squirt), coolant temp fuel correction, and cranking injection you have a way to solve basically any cranking/starting issue you could encounter. There is no reason your car can't be tuned to start perfect. This is not AEM, or a 2JZ
