Stroked VQ's power ranges

I know currently shops are offering several different stokes for the vq. I'm looking into building up my 2007 g35. As far as the strokes go i know they offer a 3.8L , 4.0L and a 4.2L for the DE platform. What kind of power increase is seen when stroking? Compared to the 298hp of the stock rev-up were do these range? Also I'm going to be building for 650whp daily driven is stroking somthing i need to consider? I understand it decreases spool time but is it noticable how much earlyer will the boost come in? Heh lots of questions :-D

daily driven = only car that you need to drive to work?

daily driven = a car that you would like to drive on a daily bases, but have another car that you use to drive to work?

if this car is used to get you to and from work on a daily bases, no way would I be looking at modifying it so heavily. In terms of reliability, you want a simple setup. Personally I wouldn't recommend stroking it, I would run stock sleeves and run a couple levels of boost.

daily driven as it will be driven daily but not my only mode of transportation

are you sure you're not confusing bore and stroke? each plays their own role in the overall scheme of things

650whp and daily driven does not peacefully co-exist, so keep that in mind

OK, I guess my next question is.... why 650? why not 700? or 750? or 752.8?

Do you have experience with these cars @ the HP you are looking to acheive? If not, how do you know 400 or 500 hp isn't enough?

The answer to your question is no. Based on your question, I'm not going to say it won't be noticeable. I'm going to say that you will be more than happy with your car at those power levels. A stroker would not be necessary at those power levels unless you were building a track car or doing it for the sake of doing it.

My last set up was a turbnetics kit i pushed out to 530whp. I put my goal hp at 650 because i want to be about a 130 trap in the quarter. With the weight of my car i need somewere in that ballpark of horsepower.

I haven't personally driven a ST Z with over 500, but what I can tell you is that if you move to a twin setup, the power comes on stronger and will have a broader range -> generally speaking. Have you decided on a turbo setup? I think that will better help you decide if a stroked/bored setup is right for you.

If you are going for mid 600's, I would probably go for an APS extreme setup on stock sleeves, though I would research some of the twin offerings from GTM before making my final purchase. I just don't trust any sleeving, and with a stroked setup, I just think there are too many variables... I just don't feel there is enough time on the kits for me to feel comfortable with them.

goog luck

I will probably be using a SP or SFR twin turbo set up. as far as turbos go i want to be running two GT-K 350 or GT-K 450 with a small hotside.

just by doing math i figure about 360 bhp for a 4.2L

For my own curiosity can you share how you came to that number?

I'm guessing he did: (4.15L/3.5L)*298hp = 358hp

athensgls, a few comments:

1. You brought up faster spool - and while this is a valid point I would phrase it differently. Most of the twin turbo kits on the market already spool ridiculously fast in my opinion, so faster spool on the same kit ends up translating to more choke on the top end (larger displacement, same small turbine housing). The benefit regarding spool is the ability to run larger turbos and produce more power. The added displacement will boost tq numbers too.

2. When maximizing power on a specific fuel (such as pump gas), larger displacement allows you to make more power with all else remaining the same.

3. Here are a couple links to strokers we have done with results.
-- NA, comparison of stock vs stroker vs stroker w/ ITB VQ35 NA Stroker ITB
-- FI, Wongy's G35 currently makes over 640whp on our DD and over 700whp on a dynojet. It was daily driven on pump gas at this power level for an extended period of time before the owner left the country. It is still on the same engine years later. VQ35 FI Stroker 600+whp

Wow is that 530 on a Z or G? U have piks and dyno from that.

athensgls 06-30-2009 09:51 PM

i used to ive moved and kind left the mod world for a while so i don't have them anymore. I made that on a 2007 G35 on a mustang dyno

Fairlady_z33 07-02-2009 09:44 AM

Don’t stroke it like many have said already its not worth the money if you aint going to use the set up for what it is. Save yourself some cash and just build a good 3.5L no sleeves and get your self a used greddy kit cheap and it will make your power goals with some juice left and if you ever decide to upgrade you can upgrade the 18g to 20g. I had the greddy kit for like 2 years and I must say that had no issues with them at all spools quick and makes good power for the 3.5L.
