Knock off Garrett turbo's......beware

Maybe this is not new to the FI community but I was shocked and pissed when I found out. Apparently there are alot of knock off "Garrett" turbos out there that are produced in China for alot less money with alot less quality. Just because your housing is stamped "Garrett" it may not be the real deal. These crappy units can be bought for much less, resulting in big retail profit, and will usually last for a warrantee period but are not nearly the quality of a true Garrett turbo. I suggest you know who you by from and make sure your getting what you pay for. :dunno:

hmm interesting, how can you tell if you have a fake

terps Jul 22, 2009 05:40 PM

doubt most people will run across these since most do not build their own kits, unless you buy an ebay kit and if so you deserve it.

I've had REAL Garrett's and fake garretts in my hands and the difference is pretty obvious. The aluminum compressor cover is shinnier and cheaper looking on the china one and the turbine wheels look like crap in comparison. For someone who had a turbo in their hands then the difference will not be noticed but if you've had your share of turbo experience then it's pretty obvious.

Just like the APS TT kits. (Well the newer ones at least...and not the Extreme Version)

I guess a few companies feel its a good idea to cut corners on things that cost customers several thousands to fix :(

Why do we buy anything from China? Its all disposable crap that will have to be replace in a years time, so is the savings really worth it...
