Bent rod

Hey guys I’m having a bad day since Venny called me & told me that after one pull on the dyno I bent a rod. He just installed the 530 jwt kit.
I know I have to build. I just want to know should the shop be responsible for replace my motor? I did have 100k

I no longer want the 530 if im building 700 would be better. what you guys think

wannabuy350z 09-03-2010 08:47 PM

i will make this plan and simple...

you took the risk and purchased an illegal forced induction system. there is a reason why tuners have a reputation and a history of good tunes that do not damage an engine. because no shop will cover engine damage.

graffkid732 09-03-2010 08:55 PM

Usually shops will say somewhere and sometimes have you sign something saying that they are not responsible. Unfortunately it sucks, but the chance you take when doing things like this.

where did you get illegal from??? Only an authorized JWT dealer can order & install there kits

Glex25 09-03-2010 09:06 PM

I guess since you talking about a authorized JWT dealer and shop you mean Vinnyten?

Did you consult with them about any concerns as far as a turbo kit on your stock motor?

Yes did talk to shop about that’s why I went with the 530 kit. I was told it was safer. I was told I would have to take it easy because I had over 100k. These guys do good work I don’t know what happened. I know they will work with me but the cost of the rebuild is what’s killing me. what should i do?

wannabuy350z 09-03-2010 10:09 PM

illegal as in some states its not smog legal. anyway, you should have been advised about future possible problems that may occur.

a stock vq35de has 10.3:1 compression. not very boost friendly, but people get by with 6-7 psi.

but it just seems that your engine was tired.

shortblock from kyle @ IPP is around 2500 i think

Glex25 09-03-2010 10:09 PM

Any tests done on the motor previous to the installation to make sure the motor was healthy?

Leakdown?

Compression?

In most cases if you talk to the shop that you were working with, they will usually cut you a deal on building the engine.

0jiggy0 09-04-2010 02:37 AM

Boosting a motor with over 100K was the problem. Dont expect a shop to say its a bad idea when your about to give them 10 grand to do it...

Your right the owner seems to be a stand up guy. After sleeping on it I’m sure we can work something out.

Damn, sorry to hear. A 530 kit will still be fun on a built block, you'll probably be pushing something like 450whp/500wtq (fun daily driver).

GT-ER 09-04-2010 07:29 AM

Why do people think 100K miles is a lot of miles? 100K miles is peanuts on an engine. It blew up on the VERY FIRST RUN. The run that's supposed to run ultra detuned and weak to start tuning. I'm sorry but I don't buy it. I've seen pro tuners blow engines up all the time...never on the very first run though. I'd think twice.

My car is only 15K shy of 100K and I've beat the living crap out of it. I've even taken it to the point of HEARING it knock on various occasions and pulling back on the timing and have yet to blow.

Also, saying the 530 kit is SAFER than the 700 kit is just ridiculous. Having twin GT35R's is the safest of all and the most powerful at the same time...maybe someone could tell me why? ;)

Vas_Z33 09-04-2010 07:49 AM

Damn sorry to hear... Ive done business with vinny and he is a standup guy.. If I were you, I wouldnt buy the block from him.. idk it just seems like your paying way too much from his shop. Id get it from IPP.

It sucks because if your building the motor your gonna want to have a good EMS. and he doesnt tune anything really.. other than SS box and hydra. ( correct me if im wrong, last time i heard )

Edit: Iam upwards of 90+K miles on mine.. and i beat the living hell out of it. Ive been about 20K miles boosted between the vortech and single.. Remember a good tune is always a good tune. ( not saying he is a bad tunner ) but you cant say 100K miles is what blew the motor. Every car is different, yes... but not all will blow at 100K lol. Good luck OP

100k miles makes the risk bigger than boostiing at 20k 40 or 50k. we dont know how these 100k miles were put on this motor. track days? allot of variables here. and vinny only will warrant the motor he builds and tunes inhouse.

I drive 114 miles to work 4 days a week sometime driving hard. change my oil every 3000 or 3500 if i don't have time. have not done track days yet. I really don't get it bent rod on the first pull at 320 whp just my luck:dunno:

I know what happened, the tuner screwed up. It happens and it doesn't even mean he's a bad tuner...although on the very first pull really makes me think otherwise as usually you'd make the tune so weak that bending rods would be nearly impossible.

I kinda have to agree here as it def sounds like he screwed it up.

rcdash 09-04-2010 02:10 PM

Metal fatigue is cumulative, so bending a rod on the first pull is not surprising on a used stock DE motor, seeing over 300 wtq for the first time. Any other explanation is highly unlikely, imo. You all have too much faith in these wimpy rods!

I would recommend you go with one shop for everything so they can stand behind their work. Getting a mail order block to save a few blocks now may end up costing you a lot more in the long run. Based on several years of forum feedback, I've never heard bad things about Vinny Ten except that he's very busy. If he's willing to work with you to build the motor, I would accept the offer. It's all about your trust in him though. If there was someone in the area you trusted more, I presume you would've gone to them in the first place.

Nexx 09-04-2010 02:30 PM

stick with the 530 and get it built. when you start pushing the car more and more the costs just keep getting higher and higher.
