APS TT smoking from bank 1 when rev'd at idle.....

Guys, quick questions for you. I have a built APS TT with the garrett turbos. I have a true dual exhaust and when I rev my car 1-4/5K rpm a get a decent puff of smoke (oil smoke I think) from the right hand exhaust (bank 1).

The turbo's have about 3K on them and have never done this before, the oil level is fine and I have custon oil returns that are welded in to the upper oil pan.

The car does not smoke under boost that a can see out the rear veiw mirror, but my GF said when she was driving behind me she could see a small amount of smoke.

I know this could be a oil seal in the turbo or execeive CC pressure but any other options out there?

Ill check the oil level tomorrow and may be swap out my breather system to a small CC vent filter and see if that helps.

Thanks for any tips guys. :icon8:

As long as the return lines are sloping continually downwards with no flat sections, that's the best you can do. The crankcase filter is a good idea - I keep the rear driver's side port with just the filter. In a car without cats you are going to get a puff of black smoke when you go WOT from the fuel being dumped out of the motor...

I would rule out excessive crankcase pressure. If you are just sitting doing a free rev to 5k rpms there isn't any boost being built therefore the pressure in the CC isn't going to be high.

I'm not sure what kind of seals aps turbos use but the seals on that turbo could be wearing out.

Yeah makes sense mate, also the other bank is fine (very small amount of smoke) and would see the same CC pressure as the right bank.

Crap if the seals only lasted 3K and 1.5-2K were break in miles! :-(

What type of oil are you using/have you used since install of the kit? Are these the OG Garrett turbos or the cheaper ones that come with the new kits?

There's a surprising amount of crankcase fumes even free reving. Not sure what your current set up is, but if you've still got the stock PCV valve on there, it's bound to give you trouble as it doesn't flow well and can't hold boost.

XBS Apr 18, 2011 12:36 AM

Although highly unlikely, it could be possible that running the thicker weight oil, then going to a lower wait could be the problem. Have you tried switching back to 15-50 just to see what happens?

XBS Apr 18, 2011 12:37 AM

Also, can you make a video of the amount of smoke if possible? That might help to see exactly how much smoking it is.

djtimodj Apr 18, 2011 11:23 AM

Im still running a PCV valve but may drill it out. I'll get a video up soon guys.

Yeah my next oil change will be back to 15w-50 I think. This should help.

Let us know how the car reacts after the oil change, give it about 100 miles to burn off the old oil before judging.

Good luck!

don't forget to put an upgraded check valve after you drill out the pcv. If you leave it open then you will actually be forcing boost direclty into your valvecovers.

Lol. No guys this is a strange one...... When my car was smoking it had the oil level at the L mark on the dip stick. I've topped up with the same 10w-40 to full and took it out for a 20 mile drive. Stoped off and rev'ed at idle like before and smoke is very reduced basically gone? I get a puff of black smoke (small amount) out both exhausts as full is dumped in but no oil smoke like before??

I've only ever herd of people having to much oil in the sump causing smoke issues and never not enough? I'll still make a video soon and let you guys see. ?

binder Apr 22, 2011 09:24 PM

or it could have been a little oil that leaked past the seal causing some smoking issues but then one you burned it all off the smoke would stop.

I had this issue when my scavenger pump wasn't primed properly and oil backed up in my turbo. It smoked for a week.

Small vid from today.

Im gonna change to a 5w-50 in the next few weeks and see what happens.

that was a LOT of white smoke at the start. That's definitely a seal leaking. How long was it sitting before you reved it like that?

also, i'm not familiar with those kits but it seems like i can hear the turbo spinning way too much. With my 67mm mid mount turbo i can't hear the turbo spinning on a free rev. Maybe the bearings/journals on that turbo are worn causing noise and oil leak? Any aps owners have that same noise?

TwoFiveBar Apr 26, 2011 01:03 PM

What is the ID of you custom return lines? How about your feed lines - are they APS or custom? Garrett turbochargers are sensitive to feed/drain set-ups.

str8dum1 Apr 26, 2011 01:06 PM

you cant hear your turbo? weird. are you sure you are not over oiling? the only time i couldnt hear my turbos is when I tried that -4AN feed. over oiled the turbos. Went back to the -3AN and back to normal.

OP, the video looks fine. whatever you did fixed the problem

Guys the car was idling for a min or so after a 12 mile drive. That rev was 1k - 5k rpm. The oil supply is oem APS, the oil drains are about the same ID as the APS ones just made from braid hose and returned into the sump.

The car sounds normal to me? The exhaust only has two small back box's so you can hear the spool up and down quite loud? Thats fine though isnt it?

djtimodj Apr 26, 2011 01:26 PM

Binder your 67mm turbo my not spool up as easy as my smaller GT28rs's at a free rev?? May be your needs some load?
