STS turbo's on pump gas
Obviously forcing air into an engine increases the compression ratio, but what could you safely and reliably boost a factory DE with a STS turbo on pump gas?

"safely" and "reliably" dont usually go well with "boost" but its going to depend on the tune. In short, yes you can turbo your car and use pump gas. It will also depend on your goals of the build as to what fuel you wish to use.

Low boost at ~5-8psi and 400whp and under can be done safely with a good tuner... Reliable as mentioned before with safely doesn't fall into the book of notes... There's never a guarantee with modding, simple as that.

It's not a n00b question. Cramming air more densely into a confined space will absolutely raise the ratio. I can run 93 octane here and I was just wondering if I would run into detonation issues unless I used an octane booster. Mid you got the elitist snob thing down buddy. I was just curious if I could run 5 pounds of boost or so on a vehicle that runs a 10.3:1 ratio and not seriously run into problems.

LOL It is indeed a NOOB question. There is plenty of info in countless threads over the years to show what the general consensus is for safe boost levels with pump gas on a stock VQ motor with the various turbo kits, including STS.
But to answer your question... You should be fine at 5PSI with 93 octane and a good tune. Any failures you may experience at that boost level would not be octane related. |
Okay, maybe I'm leaving myself out there but as a total Noob I'm just going to ask for clarification on the whole compression thing because now I'm confused. No matter what your level of boost, the increase in fuel and air are all going to be compressed to the same ratio- Isn't compression a mechanical calculation as opposed to a chemical one? If you take 4 times as much air and fuel and cram it into a calculated space and squeeze it together the same way it's still compressed to the same mechanical ratio isn't it?

What a bunch of asses on this forum. It must be easier to type a negative comment than a positive one.Even the moderator will back these loosers before helpng you out ! Detonation will take the rods out before cylinder pressure. I would look into methenol injection if you dont want to lower your compression.

I have had my STS kit for 4 years now w/ no major problems. Like others have already mentioned...find a good tuner. I just had my G retuned w/ a different tuner and it feels like a different car. Remember, anything can happen w/ FI.

OP asked a question and it has been answered. Try reading the STS thread and/or the F/I stickies and the info you want is there. If you would like to have a debate or discussion on boost vs compression ratio feel free to start another thread and there are several very informed members that I'm sure would chime in.
