Questions/ thoughts on upgrading 18g's v.s BW EFR's
I’m starting to do some homework on upgrading my 18g Greddy kit, and have been looking into the borgwarner turbo systems… Granted the common change I have seen is twin 6265 or a set of the garret systems.
I’m looking at two things, one is the EFR turbos from Borgwarner, where if it makes sense, I would retain all the Greddy piping and fabricate new flanges to match things up. That would be option A, and it would allow me to get rid of the wastegate and dump tubes as everything would be part of the turbo assembly. The second thought I have is just upgrading the turbos through forced performance and doing the 18g upgrade to the comparable 20g specs. That would be option B. Would it make more sense to just get 20g’s or do the upgrade? What kind of difference will there realistically be with an 18g upgrade v.s the 18g’s I currently run? I know the Borgwarner is the best way in the end to go, but will my piping be too restrictive to flow such a setup… I wouldn’t be going too much larger in size for the turbo as the power band in the 18’s is instant and strong throughout the entire rpm range. What are some thoughts on this? Is it even worth doing? Anyone have any experience with the Borgwarners on the Z platform? Thanks guys for the input in advance. |
the greddy housings are physically tiny while the BWs are huge.
YOu are going to be limited by the space off those manifolds. The headaches associated with trying to mount anything besides a greddy turbo there will be enormous. If you want bigger, non-greddy turbos, get a different turbo kit. Also, you'd have to go with something quite a bit bigger (ie alot laggier) to make #'s that were significantly different enough to justify the cost. |
Talk to Ray about it and go make power.
The clowns on this site haven't figured out how to make good power on 18G's in 8yrs, and you are asking them about 20G's and/or more power? |

Kinda OT, but what's a good shop to get 18g's rebuilt here on the west coast? My turbos have some shaft play to go along with it's cracked manifolds.

heres a thread with some info on the 6258 which is about the size EFR you'd be using
http://www.supraforums.com/forum/sho...e-and-personal But the supra guys really arent using these yet, and they are early adopters, so you wont find any VQ specific data |

Do you have a xxxwhp target in mind?

Honestly i'm a little under 700 now, and would like to get closer to 800 as i'm looking to drag it more... I'd like to flow more volume while retaining an aggressive power band similiar to that of which I have now. When I put it to the floor, there is ZERO lag, it just rockets, and I want to retain that, hence the BW potential, but I may getting to far out there for what has been accomplished thus far.
Maybe some of the shops could chime in if they have dealt with BW's at all? |
