Z Turbo Project (fun, fun, fun!!! ^ ^)
Updates: Pictures of new Hardware (Page 2)
Ok guys, I decided to make a thread here about my progress on my Z turbo project. Im 24, I own a 2003 350z. Last month, I got a side vq35de engine to build to start my project. Got it for a steal, $300.
Now mind you, this is my 1st engine rebuild. I do have my dad, who has experience building engines when he use to do local drag racing. Plus I have you guys! . No timetable really on this whole project, I expect to be done this year, but gonna take my time and do it right way.
This past weekend I started the tear down process. Only major problem I found was a bent rod in one cylinder. The guy i bought from said engine locked up on him. Im assuming water got into the combustion chamber or something, and the rod said "uh oh" LOL.
I have the funds currently to buy everything for the bottom end. My power goals are 485rwhp-510rwhp. Since this is my daily driver, I believe a single turbo setup (some lag) would yield better fuel economy. Im assuming, ill wait to hear from you experienced guys. I do own a motorcycle so its not a big deal if i end up in high teens. but 22mpg average would be awesome!! Im looking at the BP Single Kit, and following progress on the new version to be released this year. Twins Would be awesome, as I have the engine out of car already, but unless I can get some bigger turbos for more high end, think single probably best. Like said earlier, I want some lag.
Called a local machine shop today, and they will balance the bottom end for reasonable price! So I think im set. heres whats on my bottom end list
Build Stage 1
Eagle Rods, Wiseco Pistons, Rod/Main bearings, Stillen Oil Pan, ARP Main Studs.
Build Stage 2
head studs, injectors, gaskets, plugs, clutch
Some Pics of dissassembly. The crank is still in the block. Will remove that when get ready to go to balance it all:

@bmccann101, yea. I found it on craigslist. The guy had it in storage facility! He Was tired of paying to hold it, so just basically gave it away to me.lol. I had to drive all the way to charlotte to get it, but it was worth it. The Heads look fantastic. There is the normal grit on the underside where the valves and pistons meet, but I was told to just get some kind of solvent and just use something with a sharp edge and carefully move that all away.
About BP headers, ill jot that down in my notes.
Probably going to buy bottom end hardware in next couple days. im just scowering different websites, making sure getting best prices.

if your going to have a machine shop balance have them check out the main for straightness. or you can do it yourself, get a iso certified precision straight edge(pretty much all precision tools should be iso certified) and stand it on edge in the mains block side pretty much in the center. then take feeler guages and see if theres any gaps anywhere where the straightedge is touching. 90% of blocks are fine but some do need to be line bored/honed.
about 200 bucks to get that done but if it needs done might as well get it done when the stuffs there for balance, and bore/hone.

thanx
waiting to hear back from Sasha. I Asked a few questions. as his kit is DIY, Its on my watch list.
about the balancing the "main" ill look into that. The engine is at my dads house, because of course he has all the necessary tools. I stay about 1 hr away, but i've put it down in my notes to check, next time I get down there.
i deposited my federal tax return today, so once that shows up in my bank, I'll quickly use it all for the bottom end hardware

Update:
I took the crank out of the block. It has some ridges on its sides. You can see in the pic below. I assume thats normal. What isnt normal is pic #1. The cylinder with the bent rod broke one of the oil thingys off that side. Theres three when your looking at the block from the underside. Pic #2 is how the other two look. What part is this? as I need to replace just that one broken one.
Also Went ahead and ordered Rods, Pistons, Main & rod bearings, stillen oil pan, Main Studs. $1500, gone that quick. Probably wont be until Early June when i can spend that type of cash again, for top end hardware. So I'll have some time to do a good bottom end build.
