Default Vortech Guys, Blower Speed Talk

For All Vortech Guys,

Attached Below is a thread I found from a very experience Vortech Guy (Bob Kurgan) who has a 7.00 Second Mustang. It's about the V7 YSi-Trim, but you can apply the same info to our cars.

Note: The vortech V7 YSi-Trim Blower is the Most forgiving Blower Vortech Makes. It's Speed Rating is 65,000, and yet Bob spins it to well over 80,000rpm with a cog setup. Note what Bob says about the Serpentine Setup. I've said this forever, that serp belts always have some slip.

Re: YSi max rpm?
sorry for the delay guys..

I can tell you from experience that the YSi will continue to make POWER by spinning the blower higher and higher.. we have successfully spun the blower well over 80k with a cog setup, so this is actual speed... The transmission has survived many passes without any issues.. The other thing is if you are running a serpentine, i would assume you have 5-10% belt slippage! So, if you pulley is at 80k, expect about 72-76k actual impeller speed..

its very important to have a high quality LARGE BOV to vent all the air on decel.. that will save you blower!

good luck!

I think the trick, as it always is with high power supercharger setups....is minimizing belt slip...

I'm still trying to figure out how to switch to an 8-rib setup...I know ATI can make an 8 rib crank and I get Vortech 8 rib idlers, bit I don't know how to get 8 rib pulleys for the alternator and power steering pump...

This is for all of you Vortech Guys that are always talking about Over-Spinning the Blower.

My vortech was great on stock block but with my built block I gave up the parasitic power loss, huge waste in fuel and fighting for every tiny hp gain. Although I still get fed up with some turbo things.

OldManZ350, Thanks for posting this. This confirms my decision to overspin (through calculations) my V3 blower w/ 928M Impeller on my previous setup. However, I never would have thought it could be as high as a 10% loss.

I'll also be adding a bigger BLV to my "immediate" buy list for my YSi setup before I start cranking up the boost.

I'd be interested if you found out more information regarding the ALT and PS pulleys. I'm wondering if Dayco would MFG custom ones if we gave them the dimensions of our stock ones?

Most of the Drag Guys use a ProCharger Open Race Bypass Valve. About $380, about the same as a Vortech Maxflow bv57 Bypass Valve.

Some use 2.

Pic on the left is a small block Ford with a YSi.

What is the most you overspun your Sc trim to 500whp?

This is true...the amount of extra fuel I've had to get into my setups to hit 500-600whp is pretty ridiculous...I mean, running 1000cc to get a measly 600whp is pretty crazy, and its an exponential fuel improvement required for every gain past 500whp...

But alas, I need a CARB number from Vortech for California, if I ever have to pop my hood...

34/28 cog, 2.87@7100rpm, Static is 62,355 less 5% slip=59,237 No Problems, old style (V2 SC-trim rated @ 53,000) about 12% over. I'm rarely above 6500rpm.

Same problem up here. California is stuck with crappy 91 octane and random emission searches. I'd have twin turbos if I wasn't in CA.

I have actually spun my V3 blower slightly faster than Tim but we ended up running into upper end of the IDC and my tuner thinks we are also starting to max out the fuel pump possibly. I also forgot the Maf sensor is on the upper edge also.

With my current stock block set up, I'm still experiencing belt slippage in the upper rpm. Hopefully Tim Vortech bracket stiffener will help resolve that issue. My dyno results are located on this website, but keep in mind this is a stock block on 100 octane with no fuel return system (stock)...... http://www.zcarblog.com/2013/01/16/p...rtech-g35.html

I wouldn't have made it to where I'm at without the help of Tim, Jeff aka binder, rich aka str8dum1, and Corey aka G Zilla. I wanted to say thank you all. These guys will steer you onto the right path.

I didn't mean to jack your thread Tim but wanted to that I'm also overspinning my Vortech blower on my stock block. I Do Not recommend pushing this much power on the stock block and I believe 600whp is achievable with my current set up since my A/F (11.4) and I can still add some timing to the equation.

Good luck with all the current Vortec builds and thanks for Vortech Bracket stiffener idea.

Can you list the Details of you Vortech Setup for comparison?

You need a CJM Stage 2 Fuel Return, or build your own.
What your Rev limiter set at?, Ect

I made 540whp/436wtq with 108 octane, rev to 7100rpm

I would do the TT too. But not willing to take the risk. Goodluck!

Researching vortech for awhile now. Always give priority to info from oldman350z. Much respect. Must have a fluidampr crank pulley to get 62,300 static.
Until confident engine/trans will survive the plan is ATI 6.61 cp, stock 3.33 on a v2 or v3 sci @ 6,800 redline for 55,700 static rpm. 800cc, 340 lph for more power later. Oil & trans coolers, gt maf & filter behind the headlight. 92k on stock block & transgo a/t. Uprev tuned, invidia dual & kinetix hfcc's.
Will run without idler pulley. Already deleted.
Anyone got a setup like this, ATI, 3.33 run w/belts the stock vortech route? Looking for a belt length before digging in & measuring for it during install just in case I gotta order the ****er.

Cant say I have direct experience with that. But whats your exact setup?

Ill try to remember to update this post but my current setup is a v7 JT-trim, ATI superdampr crank pulley, 2.93" jackshaft pulley, and a 34/28 cog setup. Im expecting over 25psi

Oh buddy, we got nothing in common here. I'm talking a v3. Looking for low 400's now & when I get bored, build & up it to low-mid 5's. No setup yet. Trying to get the ducks in a row & belts always seem to be a pita so I thought someone out here went the 3.33 w/ati cp route. I think it will be a better mild setup than the 2.87 & stock cp for a few reasons but I have yet to find this combo/belt size. Will probably buy a 79.5" up to an 80" & cross my fingers that one will work.
