TT+test pipes smell on 350z's

Just curious... I've driven a catted TT G35 for years now and as expected, there isn't much smell over stock unless I'm deep in boost. However my TT Z with test pipes is pretty bad with the windows down even just cruising out of boost. Enough to leave a fuel smell on my clothes like I just mowed my lawn. A/F gauge is a solid 14-14.7 on both banks so it's not pig rich. It is a tired engine (130kmi) along with the colder plugs it's probably not getting a complete burn (hence more fuel smell).

So my question is this expected or is it possible I have an exhaust leak somewhere up front? Sitting idle I sniff around the engine bay and don't smell or hear anything like a leak...or maybe it's just normal and I'm spoiled by my G with cats and the exhaust exit further behind me.

It is normal...I am in the same boat. Nothing is "filtered" and it stinks....I will add two 3" (parallel) high flow catalytics to my exhaust this winter just for this reason.

Also had fuel smell without cats, yuck. E85 isn't too bad but pump gas is terrible with test pipes, esp if you park the car in a confined garage.

Yeah it's pretty bad sitting still in an enclosed space. I can't stay in my garage while my car is warming up or else my clothes absorb the smell like you described above. It's not bad once I'm out though. I can't smell it with the windows down at a stop.

Hmm so you don't notice anything driving with the windows all the way down either stopped or driving? And you're built and all?

This is why I am asking, I'm getting blasted 24/7 in boost, out of boost, stopped, moving, doesn't matter LOL. Only solution is windows UP.

It's pretty bad for me Aswell. I just throw it in neutral approaching a stop light. Direction of the wind plays a big roll lol. I'm also venting Both valve covers to atmosphere so exhaust and the smell of oil vapor by the end of a drive I'm dizzy haha

I was in the same boat. Then installed Kinetic cats.

Was under impression that smell is mostly because burning oil (typically 1.5qt@1k miles), hopefully it will be better with fully rebuilt engine soon.

Keith has spoken, I shall wallow in the lawn mower funk :)

Switch to E85 and you'll wallow in sweet smelling corn funk...

There's an E85 station down the street... but I'd need new injectors. Greddy 440cc FTL.

Stroked, built, and boosted with twin GT3071R's putting down mid-600 whp and open wastegates so it's all going straight to atmosphere directly in front of me when I'm in the boost. Like mentioned above though, I guess it really has to do with wind direction when I'm at a stop. Garage is crazy nasty though when it's just sitting there idling. Burns my eyes.

I notice you have a big wing, I wonder if that helps keep the gasses from circulating back into the cabin. Pretty sure I have a vortex of some sort that is looping the exhaust right back in the windows when they are down.

i dont notice any smell stopped or driving unless im standing outside the car right by the exit or the wind is blowing it around and thats with it dumping right behind my driver window in the rocker. havnt had anyone else complain either since i fully welded the rocker to box in what i cut out.

oh ya! these cars are one of the worst for exhaust smell. The exhaust sure has a way of coming around into the open windows on the 350z. I am an almost strictly windows down driver, so I can really relate. Back when I used to run only 100 octane gas... after a cruise night my entire outfit would stink like fuel and I could smell it on my skin when I would get in the shower.

None of my other catless cars had the exhaust smell come around so much.

My 370z is the same way. Thankfully I run it on E85 which doesnt bother anyone nearly as much and doesnt soak into my clothes much if at all.

jerryd87 Nov 5, 2013 02:06 PM

i wish anything flowed into my windows, windows down driving i barely get a breeze doing 60 down the high way. ive regretted deleting ac since i did it.

phunk2 Nov 5, 2013 02:13 PM

do you have a Z or a G? I would figure the aero is different on the G, not sure if I would expect it to pull the exhaust around as bad as the Z does

djamps Nov 5, 2013 06:03 PM

I've noticed with the windows cracked or half way down it's BAAD. So it's either windows all the way up or all the way down to be bearable. And if I go into boost it's changes from exhaust smell to straight up spilled gas. The A/F is spot on - 14.7 cruising and 11.5 in boost. I've checked high and low for exhaust leaks or fuel leaks and there aren't any. This thing just freaking stinks LOL.

I'm talking about a Z with test pipes and dual 3" exhaust. I also have a G but it's catted and doesn't smell except when deep in boost.

Resmarted Nov 5, 2013 08:32 PM

I'm curious, do most of you guys have duals? Or rather at least dual exit?
