how to tell if it's an open dif?
 

without driving the car, how can i tell if the G35 sedans i've been looking at are open or not? the reason i ask, is that some cars are 200+ miles away, and i'd like to know before i drive out to look.

AT or MT... if AT most likely open... MT almost certain VLSD... just ask the owner if it’s performance package... if so and post 04 it should be VLSD… it’s a great car even with open diff… I have one. Unless you are racing, the open diff is not an issue… even when racing it hasn’t hindered me (much).

Get the VIN and Call a Dealer or Infiniti's Customer Service Line.

Jack the rear end up and turn one wheel . If the other wheel turns the other direction , its a VLSD

I thought that only worked with Mechanical LSD's?

We did it with mine and it worked
