Nismo exhaust installed - wow, it's loud...
 

So after reading so many discussions of the various exhausts, I was stuck between the Borla and Nismo since they seem to be two of the quieter aftermarket exhausts available. (Aside from the Fujitsubo, which is about as quiet as stock on my friend's car.) I recently found a deal on a used Nismo, so I grabbed it.

I've had it installed a couple of weeks now, and just got back from a road trip this weekend. It is indeed only a bit louder than stock. The only exception is from about 2800-3500 rpm. Here, it is much, much louder. At that rpm range (with even small amounts of throttle) the thing is so loud that the plastic interior dash panels in my car start to rattle and vibrate!

My buddy has a G35c with a Borla on, and I took it out for another drive today to really get a feel for the Borla. On his car, that Borla is extremely quiet. With the windows up, you can barely hear it until you get up high in the rpms. If you roll down the windows it's more audible, but I don't find it to be much louder than stock at all until you get up high in the revs. Is a Borla that quiet on a Z, too? I know the G has more sound deadening, so anything on a Z will be louder than on a G. But given that a Borla on a G is barely louder than stock, can the same be said of a Borla on a Z?

Regarding the Nismo exhaust, I definitely love the tips and the polished muffler which is visible from behind the car. Very nice looking. Perfect, if you ask me. Around town the sound is fun, but I think the droning on the freeway is just a little too much for me.

So... anyone want to buy a Nismo exhaust? ;)

the borla on my z is kinda loud. annoyingly so at times. at low rpms is where you'll hear it rumble. and it doesn't rattle my interior, but i've never had interior rattle as a problem.

I have nismo on my G and i think its pretty quite but my friends tell me its pretty loud espically under WOT

Hehe. Thanks for the offers on the exhaust everyone. :) I haven't even removed the thing yet, so let me get that taken care of and I'll post it up in the classified section. I'm not really interested in shipping it (is anyone ever?), so I think I'm gonna stick with California-based folks. :)

I could have written the original post. I installed my nismo exhaust last week. It's much louder than I expected it to be. It does drone on the highways. I've never been a fan of the "fart can" sound, so I hope I haven't made a big mistake. I'm going to stick with mine for awhile and see it grows on me.

That was my concern about Nismo. But it's the only exhaust on the market that does not loose any low end torque. Well I guess I have to start looking at Fujitsubo

My thoughts exactly. The drone isn't bad at all if you are going down hill or on flat highway. But if you give it any gas at all or start going up a hill (even a slight one) it gets loud fast. Unfortunately many highways involve continuous slight up and down grades, so the exhaust goes from virtually silent, to very loud, back and forth the whole trip. Gets a bit fatiguing on long road trips. I live on the central coast of California and made a trip down to the D1 races last weekend. It was enough that I put in my ear plugs while driving on the highway. (The ones I had with me for the races.) :)

its safe to assume that any aftermarket exhuast is gonna give out some sort of droning sound if one was to constantly apply the gas pedal.

The nismo drone sound can be dimmished but turning up the volume of your radio. In all honesty, its not even that loud. It sound is what your sensitive to then i suggest you getting your exhuast back to stock or get a exhuast with a silencer.

its safe to assume that any aftermarket exhuast is gonna give you some sort of drongin if one was to apply a constant pressure to the gas pedal. The point in the aftermarket product is suppose to enhance/better/show off that you dont have a stock part naturally its gonna make more noise.

If sound is your concern then perhaps you should go back to stock because performance gain = noise. Or get a silencer.

i had the same nervous fears when i installed my nismo exhaust...
I saw several civics with exhausts that seemed to sound the same as mine... and that REALLY made me uncomfortable with it...

but after a few thousand miles it mellowed out a good bit... enough to be noticeable.

either that or I just got used to it.

but in either case, I'm now even considering putting on some crawford cats... .

yep, same with mine...

put about 3k on it and it sounds beautiful now... just like stock when i'm cruising at 2.5k (thanks, tilton :p) -- wakes up a bit at 3-3.5k... hahaha, if you go to WOT in the powerband you can literally make people in other cars **** their pants :D (nice huge roar)

i'm personally looking at the UR cats, as i don't want to change the sound too much from where i've got it now, but i'll do that, throw the 3.9 gears on it and do the air inlet side of the house a bit and see where that leaves me ;)

Well, there are a few clarifications to this. When you are cruising down the highway, you are always applying gas. The trick is that some exhausts get loud even with very little engine load (light throttle) but others require more engine load before they get loud (medium to full throttle). Exhausts that get loud with light throttle will drone worse on the freeway.

At about 2800-3500 rpm, the Nismo is one of these exhausts. In that rpm range, it gets quite loud with only a small amount of throttle. Unfortunately, 6th gear in the Z at freeway cruising speed falls right into this rpm range, meaning it drones quite a bit, especially when going into a strong headwind or going up a hill where you have to apply even more throttle to compensate. And I'm not talking aggressive driving. Simply setting the cruise control at 75 or 80 puts you right into that range.

An exhaust that needs medium to full throttle before it gets loud, though, wouldn't really drone or get loud given the amount of throttle required to cruise on the freeway.

As far as just turning up the music, that's not acceptable. I *love* music, and sound/music is a part of my livelihood that I couldn't do without. (A look at my extensive home and car stereos and my home recording studio shows that!) :) However, I also care very very much about my hearing. If I have an exhaust droning at 80dB, and I crank up my stereo to 90dB to compensate, that's damn loud to play a stereo for hours at a time on a road trip. My stereo will definitely do it, but I don't want to put my ears through that. I want to be able to hear when I get old. :)

It may be completely in my mind, but my exhaust does seem to be mellowing the more I drive it. Granted, I've only had the thing on the car for a week or two but the sound seems a tad bit softer. I have noticed that it doesn't bother me as much when someone else is in the car, so maybe it's just that I'm concentrating too intensely on the noises. Other things I've noticed... my right rear suspension is starting to creak, and I have a very soft wind noise on the left that's either caused by my replacement windshield or the air flowing over the passenger side door/mirror. My fingers are crossed that a few more clicks and I'll be happy.
