Don't Look For Much From Aftermarket Exhaust! Unless...

You plan for some 'forced induction or Intake/CAI'!!!
Just got off the horn with a design engineer at a VERY reputable exhaust company who will soon be releasing yet another system (muffler and piping up to catback) and they were unable to squeeze any noteable power (hp or torque) out of the 350Z. Which once again confirms Nissan definitely did their "exhaust homework". But! I was told that the system does indeed flow @ 100+ cfa more than stock and sounds considerably more aggressive (not Ricer!) over stock! This could be a good thing for those of you (like me :D ) who plan to go with 'forced-induction' of some type or even an 'intake' setup would benefit from aftermarket exhaust. We shall soon see....

Does the company name start with an "S"? I know that Stromung and Supersprint both make high quality exhausts.
Give us a hint.

As "my word" to this individual, I will have to wait until their product is actually available. I know, I know, but my word is my bond. ;) I will say that it is scheduled for release whithin 60 days...And I will say that is neither of the 2 mentioned. Patience young Jedi's, patience....

Interesting report considering other manufacturers claims of HP and TQ gains. Even NISMO is claiming to boost peak power to 295 and TQ to 280. Gonna take some dyno time to sort this out.

Yeah, he specifically stated that manufacturers would 'fudge' numbers in order to sell their products.

Abosolutely, any of us who've been playing with mods for a while know how tuners and manufacturers will stretch the truth or even outright lie about performance increases. However, I do have a bit more confidence in the numbers NISMO is putting up since they are representing Nissan.

Another thing to consider is that while systems like the Amuse setup are getting press for big HP gains it seems that 10HP or so is comming from the Y pipe which means only 11 from the cat back part which is only 3 more than NISMO is claiming which seems at least possible. Time will tell...

Thanks for the heads up though

You can tell us......we can keep a secret!!!!!:)

Here's my interest: in what part of the torque/horsepower curves do the supposed gains occur? If someone offers me 10 to 15 horsepower between 6000 and 7000 RPMs, what's the point? How much time does an engine actually spend there? Answer: not much.

If the power gains are lower in the rev band where our cars actually live--and I haven't heard anybody say that's where the gains will be--then I'll be interested. Otherwise, I think modifiers are just getting into a spitting contest: "Mine's bigger than yours..."

I heard any mods you do willl be a waste of time unless you play with the ecu. Is this true?

While not confirmed through dyno testing (that we know of anyway) it is the belief of many that the stock ECU will adjust it's self back to near factory levels of performance after a certain amount of time. The stock WRX ECU has this problem too. Most likely, an intake will gain you, say 6 HP initially, but once the ECU adapts it may settle to 3 or 4 HP.

gains if any will be minimal.....the ecu will make em more noticible.....but dont expect major gains out of the intake and exhuast untill you run some FI...then it will be alot more noticible...

I think it's BORLA!! Except that they said they'd be releasing in a matter of 2-3 weeks..
