Megan TP's installed - Me no like :(
Well I bought a set of test pipes from dvo here, nice guy, product was in really good shape, almost looked brand new. Drove down the street to Elite Auto Performance to get them installed, nice guy Inso, good price and clean work. Replaced a bad gasket at no additional charge. Started up the car and it sounded good. Rev'd it up a bit, still sounded really nice, just what I was expecting. So Im pulling out and give it some gas and what do I hear?? Rasp!! Ahhhhhh! I hate rasp!!! Its not too bad. Only at high rpms and wot its there....alot. Under normal driving conditions it sounds perfect. Nice deep tone, loud and extremely loud when I want it to be. I just dont think Im happy with the sound. I kind of miss my regular Nismo tone. I cant even hear the whistle of my intake anymore :(
I think maybe I'll just switch to Kinetix in the next few weeks. I'll just do the install myself. Seems like a ***** but with the right tool and a lift, shouldnt be too bad. These Megan's are resonated, but there is still rasp...not much, but enough to bother me. Just thought I'd share. Again, seller, installer, and product get the thumbs up, its just not what Im looking for. All personal preference. So expect to see these tp's for sale soon. I'll post some sound clips in a day or two. Some of the guys really like the way it sounds, just not me. |
hey when you get ready to do the swap of the tp to high flows let me know (read sig) I have all the tools and a lift needed if you really want some one to help out. I wanted to get this from him too.
|
Let me know if your looking to sell them , im in the market
|
sound bites please...im so local! i go to elite too!
|
Interesting that they rasp even with the resonators. I guess you get what you pay for. What exhaust do you have?

If sound, then put the stock cats back on and get your favorite sounding catback exhaust. If you're getting upset over resonated TPs rasping, then probably even high flow cats won't sound good to you. If performance, stop being a baby and learn to love the sounds your sports car makes. ;) |

I've heard Kinetix high flo cats on the stock exhaust and I thought it was still raspy. Not as bad at my non-resonated test pipes but it still did rasp...
Like Wired said... you may as well put the stock cats on if you're worried about sound. |
:Sorry to hear you didn't like the sound. I told you that the rasp was only at the top end but I guess you didn't really like that. I've heard a few high flow cats and there was still rasp at the top end. I guess that something that you have to sacrifice when you want something other than stock cats.
Mr. X: you're really determined to get these aren't you?:) |
another question, how often are you driving at the top end in WOT?
|
When I was at the shop getting my exhaust leak fixed, there was a guy there with a fully restored 60's era Vette. Don't know what they replaced on his vette exactlly but it was located near where our cats are located. I believe it was a small muffler.
They were done with his install a few minutes before they finished up mine. He fired it up and I said sounds nice and it did. When he pulled away and went over I'd guess 3,500 rpm, it sounded like a wal mart Honda exhaust. I thoght to myself, he'll be back. I'm glad I talked myself out of messing with my cats. |
Its all a matter of how much performance means to you. I personally cant wait to install my TP's tomorrow night. I know its going to be loud, but with the potential gain, and the loss in weight, I will have a big smile on my face.

Rasp is overrated.

I delt with it for a couple of months and then decided i could not take it anymore. https://my350z.com/forum/intake-exhaust/198935-dual-exhaust-test-pipe-rasp-proven-fix.html Or you could try some high flow cats and that will help out with rasp aswell. You would still see some performance but not as much as test pipes. Later Todd |
or you could go w/ Stup headers, AAM TP's/Y-pipe/3" single...no rasp!!! But it's a tad loud :icon44: .
|
I need a sound clip with Amuse and HFC or/and TP's.:D

hahaha, I see.;) No problemo. |
Well after driving around with these on for a few days, I think Im starting to get used to the new tone. Its starting to grow on me. Sounds like an R32 with a deeper tone. Only 2 complaints right now, 1. There is a "bean inside of a can" sound coming from the right side. I can only hear it at start up and when the car is decelerating in gear or rpms coming down after a slight rev while idling. 2nd, seems like something is loose. When I go over speed bumps or when I floor it in 1st gear, feels as if something is rubbing. I think this might be due to the tp's not having that brace that the stock cats had.
Any input on these 2 issues?? |
Be careful with the Nismo and any aftermarket TP's or HFC's. The way the Nismo is setup, there has been a tendency to crack anything aftermarket that you put on. You may have already cracked a TP. I used the Kinetix HFC's for a long while with my Nismo and it sounded great 99% of the time.
