Will high flow cats help my Borla TD sound??
I just had a Borla TD exhaust installed on my 06 Z a few days ago. I don't really think it sounds much different from the stock exhaust except maybe a little bit louder (but not very much) and just a bit deeper. I guess I was hoping for a better sound. If I install high flow cats will it help with the sound? If so, how much?? I dont need a crazy loud sound, just something that sounds better (faster) and a bit more custom. Also, will I have any problems throwing codes? I have a Pop charger, Borla TD and a 5/16" spacer. If I get the high flow cats that will be the end of my motor mods and I dont want the trouble of throwing codes

Ditch the Borla.
IMO, there are other exhaust setups out there that sound a thousand times better than Borla. I think Borla should just stick to the domestics. |
there are TONS of threads on hfc and borla, check videos on youtube. Do some searching around this section of the forum. HFC will not make you throw any codes.

Here's my video with Borla + High Flow Cats (Just click around to the good parts I listed under the video. The rest is pretty much nothing since I had to film this by my self):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZzacm3V8q0 The good parts are at the beginning, around 1:08, and again around 1:45. I'm too lazy to edit, but this gives you an idea of the sound. (After 2:00 mark there isn't much, just my goofy as picking up the camera and turning it off :D) I think HFC's will help your sound no matter which exhaust you choose. It makes them a little bit louder and deeper, but with Borla, you maybe get the "rattlesnake" sound in neutral revs. Just be aware of that. |

HFCs will do wonders for the sound of your exhaust. It brings it to life, you wont be disappointed. HFCs will not throw a Check Engine, so you are good there.

My Borla sound did get better over a few weeks of use. I put test pipes and swapped out the H pipe for a Magnaflow X-pipe muffler, and let me tell you this setup sounds so sweet. I get compliments all day long. The ony other exhaust I would trade up for would be Fast Intensions or Amuse. In fact FI uses an X-pipe muffler on thier exhaust and it sounds simular to my Borla. I also gained more torque by adding the X-pipe.

The Borla breaks in after a few hundred miles I've noticed. And the gains are definitely noticeable. I've heard practically every exhaust out there for Zs, and only the Borla, and two others, sounded nice.

i have a borla with test pipes and the sound is probably the same with hi flo cats so your definatly gonna love it and you wont get any codes

No. You lose too much back pressure.

borla sounds really good with both hfc's and test pipes because of its designs and resonators. test pipes do get a little raspy but not nearly as bad as some other exhausts. dont mind the haters, the borla is one of the best sounding exhaust for the Z, plus its proven to have some of the best gains on a N/A Z. many people dont like the slip on design but when its properly installed, you'll get no leaks.
