Metallic Berk HFC's breaking down

Well, I took my barely 1 year old Berk HFC's off last night and the passenger side one has some internal damage. I've put roughly 5k miles on them with a Vortech kit and now the STS.

I PM'ed Bryan about it, so we'll see what he has to say.

Anyone else ever experience this problem? I don't currently run an EGT sensor, but maybe I should. Not sure if excessive heat is what caused this, although I never saw them glowing red or anything. I've never tracked my car, or pushed it hard for any good amount of time.

Sorry for the large picture, I'll try to get around to resizing it.

I bought them in February of '08, and Bryan informed me that they are out of their 1 year warranty. I actually planned on selling these, which is why I spent $300 on a set of resonated test pipes. Oh well, cars = money down the drain :-/

Just when I removed them. I'm sure they still flow just fine, but with the remote mount turbo, it won't be fun (or cheap) to blow out my cats.

keep us posed on what Bryan says. That isnt good after just 5K miles.

Here is what Bryan had to say...

Usually the only thing that can damage the substrate on the cats is an excessively lean mixture or misfires. Both have the same effect. Really lean mixtures will heat the catalyst to the point where it will become brittle. Misfires create a combustion event on the surface of the cat when the unburnt fuel hits the hot catalyst surface.
I was running very retarded timing for a little while when I first got my Vortech, so that might have caused it.
