Second time today you posted this davidv(that I saw anyway)...

OP, I'm not a physicist or anything...but thats usually indicative of something blocking it. My guess is the guts of the Cat began breaking down and are now clogging it up. The heat has no way to dissipate out of the exhaust on that side, so it superheats and glows...similar to holding a torch flame to metal to soften it up, etc.

Unburnt fuel makes cats burn hotter, so if one side is running richer, that would be bad, as it will burn the cat out.

well if you put cats from an 07 on your 03 that might create a few leaks. pull the cat off and check it out. if anything if they are later model cats and not 07's just bust the guts out of both or get test pipes

yes a leak would cause a falsely lean afr on the side of the leak, which the ECU would try to compensate for by dumping more fuel (turning the cat red hot).

Mikie13 is probably right...cat is probably damaged ( clogged ) and thus is making the hot gases stay longer inside making it hotter.

It does makes sense that throwing more fuel into it from running poorly could cause it as well.

However, a clogged up cat on one side could also conversely make the engine run poorly as well.

You throwing any codes? Are you positive the injectors are running correctly and your plugs are good? etc...few things you could check now at this point since people mentioned a couple other ideas.

Catalytic converters are a minor concern. If the motor is not running properly new catalytic converters will not fix it.

The cats could be whole issue, but that is hard to determine from the original post. Main points I think we need to diagnose the problem is what codes, if any, are being displayed and how bad did it run just after installation compared to now.
