Default Hopefully not something I missed for searching

I've done some searches and so hopefully I haven't missed this post already having been made, but I have a quick question to ask you guys.

Based on the umpteen million Youtube videos I've watched, I've determined that I pretty much have to have a resonator in the exhaust set up to prevent the sound of a straight piped V6 Mustang. I've even done a test of it myself where I've had my car dumped at the Y pipe, then dumped off the "midpipe", and the sound was completely and totally different, so much so that while the dumped y pipe was simply unbearable, I could live with the dumped "midpipe" and no muffler.

My plan is to run three inches off the Y Pipe through a resonator, then do a set up sorta like we did on the dealership race car at a BMW dealership I used to work at where we run one tip straight out to the bumper, then branch off right at the bumper to the other tip. Basically, it would look a little like this:

Of course I know it wouldn't be *that* straight, but you get the idea.

My question is: On a single set up like this, comming off the Y-Pipe, would I need a resonator or not? The only thing that makes me thing no is that to the est of my knowledge, the AP exahust doesn't run a resonator and isn't horribly unbearable.

If I decide to go with a true dual, I would have to run a resonator, because every single one I've heard that is just an X pipe, then straight pipes through two mufflers sounds unbearably loud and like a straight piped V8 and I'm trying to avoid that.

Advice? Opinions? Thanks in advance.

The resonator is a noise attenuating component. Similar to a muffler but the design is different. To be effective the resonator must before the muffler.

I do understand that it has to be before the muffler. I'm going to try and keep it in the same place in the system as the OEM res if I keep the resonator.

I'm wondering if I'm going to really need the resonator. Like I said, the AP exhaust doesn't see horribly loud compared to the AAM, which also uses a three inch pipe, but does have a resonator.

RF i hope u do this and have success. I was in the process of a custom exhaust (copy of por-1 but instead no res and vibrant mufflers) but ditched out. Im looking forward to the results

Talked to a buddy who does performance parts sales, getting the hookup on a resonator. Going with the Vibrant 3in in/out. At first I was thinking about skipping out on the resonator, but the set up I'm wanting to run is muffler prohibitive, and after doing a quick test run on the stock piping with no muffler, just the mid pipe with the OEM resonator, I don't really think I'm going to need them. If it is horribly unbearable, then I can just hack the pipe a bit further back and do a "custom" single with a Vibrant can.

Was thinking about changing the set up and going duals, but every dual set up I see with no mufflers or resonators sounds like a dump truck, and the cost of two mufflers and two resonators, the DIY approach becomes no more of a cost value and I might as well just pick up a prefabbed set up.

I called the dealership where I used to work and got the number for their wielder to get some pricing. I know pretty much any muffler shop could hook this up but I do want a little quality in it. He wasn't indicating that the set up to mimic the race M3 would be that expensive, especially considering it was running 3.5inch pipe straight off the headers with titanium sections, and I'm just doing 3 inch stainless steel from the Y Pipe.

Next step is to figure out what I want to do for a Y Pipe. I was quoted $500 (materials+labor) from a local go fast shop, but at that price range I could just as well pick up an AAM or Motordyne XYZ. I'll keep y'all updated as it progresses.
