What exhaust (brand) are you running and why?
Reason I ask is because I'm in the market for mids, headers, cats... and... Well... A Lot more than just that! And it got me curious - why did you change your exhaust? My pipe has a small hole in it and a small hole means NEW EVERYTHING!!! $$$$$
Childish joke aside, although I do want new exhausts I don't want to go super loud and all I find are these big booming exhausts, and I currently enjoy the Z's nice purring roar over "snap crackle and boom". Personally I'd like to keep that purr and maybe make it louder, but I don't want the entire police station to know I'm coming. I've read Stillen, Turtle, Dynomax and Walker make some of the more quieter exhausts whilst still giving a performance edge. Are there any exhausts you'd prefer? Did you swap your exhaust for pure performance? Did you do it for the sound? Did you buy brand new or used? What is the answer to life? |
Finish your college, then decide.

OBX, longtubes and true dual with the magnaflow x pipe mod.
Why.... $$$$$ I have under a grand in a full exhaust that doesn't sound bad and fitment isnt the wost after having the exhaust shop move some hangers. |

Nissan S-Tune. (No longer made but you can find them used once in a while.)
Pro: high quality, nice sound - essentially maintaining the "much revered" VQ sound but with lower tone. Looks like stock except for the polished muff. Con: Unavailable new. Minimal real power gain (fooling oneself if anyone thinks there are any true feel-it-on-your-butt gains to be had unless you are force fed.... Nissan rates the gain in low single digits but sure sounds nice. Laff. I put same on my Z34 with same results. Love me some OEM performance parts. Confident they won't let me down. |
My serious of exhausts very much follows the typical 'noob' setup, but my final destination was a good one.
1. Stock exhaust 2. Muffler Delete (gave me some volume but lots of rasp and drone) 3. HKS replica catback (fit really nice, sound was somewhat subtle but actually sounded pretty good) 4. Added strup headers and gutted high flow cats (sound was enhanced, very minimal rasp added, tone got deeper) 5. DNX catback (very hard to find these, was extremely loud, lots of rasp, did not sound good) 6. Where I am now - custom catback, custom made y-pipe that goes into 1 magna flow muffler, that goes into an exhaust cutout for when I really want to open up the exhaust, then split back to 5" exhaust tips. My last setup is by far the best. It sounds amazing in my opinion, very minimal rasp, very aggressive tone, custom made so it fits perfectly, got to choose what exhaust tips I wanted as nobody manufactures a 5" tip for our cars, and it was $600 |
Nismo because it gets the b!tches...

I run stock headers with ART pipes, Motordyne resonated Y pipe and Tomie cat back. Still loud but the resonated Y pipe made a world of difference for rasp, sound and so on
|
I have a borla exhaust, its not even as loud as stock, and doesn't sound as good. But once I rid my life of the stock cats im guessing it will liven up...

I went with Invidia Gemini CBE
Why? Personal preference, sound is perfect for me not too loud, no drone and smooth consistent airflow. Planning to pair it with MD art pipes in the future. |

HKS true dual exhaust with Megan test pipes. Loved the look and the note, not too much louder and I just had the $$$ at the time to purchase it brand new.
