Tomei-nice headers, crappy gaskets

Tomei makes nice headers but if you're installing these on a DE, watch out for the new included gaskets, specifically the passenger side gasket. Bottom header bolt closest to front of engine (on right in photos).

I'll tell you right now they are OEM (Nissan) gaskets for the HR, all you have to do is flip it upside down. Works perfectly, I did on my install, have no issues. Jumpy again lol.

DarkZ03 03-19-2018 04:22 PM

Also Tomei doesn't recommend wrapping them, which is why I left mine alone =)I hope you changed those studs and nuts,as you are supposed to.

onevq35de 03-19-2018 05:00 PM

A couple things have changed since you got yours apparently.
I damn near flipped the passenger side gasket in the trash. Didn't matter what I did, they wouldn't fit. Photo's tell the story. I just cut the outside corner with tin snips. No exhaust leaks.
Tomei not only DOES recommend wrapping them, they now come with titanium wrap and s.s. ties at no extra cost. Nope, no new studs or bolts.

DarkZ03 03-19-2018 05:13 PM

I just did mine less than a year ago, didn't come with wrap, we can get into it again but again, I did a lot of research. The v1 they did recommend doing so but not v2, also trust me when I say the gaskets are correct. I had the same initial reaction as I am a pessimistic human being, then I remembered what I do for a living and figured a company with the reputation of Tomei doesn't get there by doing stupid mistakes like that, so I got my head out of my ass and figured it out lol. There is one way and one way only it works on that side and I figured it out, like I said they are OEM gaskets after all. I know because I had 2 sets and the bags and labels are identical.

onevq35de 03-19-2018 05:21 PM

Yes, the V2 COME WITH WRAP. Read their website. Mine came with wrap and they look fantastic though it made the install so much more of a *****. Took a few hours to wrap them correctly. Photo's here; https://www.infinitiscene.com/thread...230572/page-10
No, the gaskets did not fit. Not per their instructions which happened to be the way they should fit when considering how the driver side installed and not flipped or turned around. Doesn't matter. They fit now.

The HR ones are quite as directional as the DE ones are.

Glad you pointed this out. Ima email Taka Takenawa from Tomei and point this out to him. He had me email him my photos earlier today and got right back to me to apologize and that he'd let the guys in Japan know.

DarkZ03 03-19-2018 05:32 PM

Something must have changed in the last few months but I never came with wrap, and peeps on here were told not to wrap. I prefer them naked =D

onevq35de 03-19-2018 05:37 PM

Na Dark. Wrap'em or better yet, seeing as yours are already on, get some DEI form a shield or Heatshield Products Header Armor. That's what I planned initially but my bay is tucked and I have a lot more room in the engine bay. Keeps the bay cooler for sure. I touched my wrapped headers after a drive today. 1st time out since I installed'em. They were still hot, but I wouldn't dare to touch the heat shields on the oem's, let alone bare manifolds.

DarkZ03 03-19-2018 05:40 PM

It's the same overall head tho, why do you think they can use DE headers? As someone who works for a dealer I can tell you just because they say it's not the same doesn't mean it's not, it's a "cover your ass" thing.

onevq35de 03-19-2018 05:47 PM

I don't know what to tell you Dark. Maybe you can come over to my house and yell at my engine for awhile. "WHY WON'T THESE ****ING GASKETS FIT ON ONLY YOUR PASSENGER SIDE YOU ASS****INGBACKWARDS DE?" or something like that.
The aftermarket door escutcheons will not fit my FX. They'll fit every other f'n FX 03-08 but not mine. Got photo's of that as well. Physically impossible.

DarkZ03 03-19-2018 06:02 PM

Lol, that would be funny, by all means I did not install them the way the instructions tell you to but they did fit. My car would drive a dealer crazy, it's an 04 with parts from a 06, 07 and aftermarket OEM stuff. They would scratch their head =D

onevq35de 03-19-2018 06:09 PM

I've got a thermostat & housing for an hr and the oil filter heater delete stud and now these hr gaskets, one of which does not fit.
So what do you think Dark, could this damn gasket possibly be blocking off even a small portion of the 3 exhaust ports? It fit everywhere except the bottom bolt closest to the front of the engine. I cut the outside corner off which, as you can see in the photo's, was dead center of where the bolt had to go. Could the whole gasket have shifted slightly as a result? I didn't even consider trying to check this out until tonight. I suppose if it did, it couldn't have been much.
I'm gonna have to address this with both other parties tomorrow. Not cool.

DarkZ03 03-19-2018 06:37 PM

I think the gaskets are relatively parallel so you should be ok as long as it was straight when installed.

onevq35de 03-19-2018 06:48 PM

Yeah, once on, they hardly moved. They weren't binding, but snug like the driver side.

DarkZ03 03-19-2018 07:06 PM

Funny story, I had both sets of gaskets (DE & HR) and since I had already installed the DE gaskets temporarily with a set of headers that didn't fit, I refused to reuse them and used the HR ones. Also changed my new nuts for new ones so I had fresh ones lol.

onevq35de 03-19-2018 07:28 PM

You refused to use the de gaskets because the headers didn't fit and then you changed new nuts for new nuts?
So because they were technically "used" you couldn't use'em? Oh Dark, you gotta brake that habit unless you're get'n yours for free.
The fsm would have you replace every damn part on the car because you changed your windshield wipers. I've never seen anything like it. I suppose working for a dealer, they've got you working by the book which is certainly better than working without a brain as so many mechanic shop do.
When I installed the transgo shift kit, I did replace the bolts for the pan but only because those shits were looking rough and rusty. I reused the 15 year old, 95k miled (made that word up) crush washer. No leaks. :D
