My car won't shift to 4th gear over 3k RPM....
Okay so out of the blue today I felt like my 4th gear felt real stiff...then I missed it a couple of times and I was a little confused.... Now I'm going 3,000 RPM in 3rd and when I try to shift to 4th I can't - it's like hitting a rock in the transmission. There's no grinding sound, and if i try to force it It will move left and grab 2nd....
What is this and what do I do? Please if someone could provide some insight I'd be very greatful. Note: It shifts like butter under 1k rpm and the shift pattern is fine when stopped...But It locks up when I'm actually trying to shift into the gear at the speed I should be going... |
I think it's my synchro... cause I can rev match back up to it and shift fine...how much is that to fix - roughly?

no thoughts from anyone? I've done so more researching into this and I'm still really confused... I can't even seem to find a troubleshooting guide for the problem - if it's a bad synchro technically I should feel a grinding into the gear right? I mean a synchro wouldn't be like butter one dead then dead another day would it? I mean there should have been some signs of wear, and I should still feel grinding....
Does anyone think bleeding the clutch dry and re-filling it would help? |
Hmm... I didn't do anything
But I decided to see if I could shift at real high RPM's so i took the car to 6300 RPM or so and shifted into 4th with no problem...Even more interesting is that after this my 4th gear was fine. I could shift at 3k RPM... I haven't really driven it since then but I'm hoping it will be fine... Does this make sense to anyone? |
