Won't go into gear

I was driving off a light (cruising) and I started to feel the gear shifter catch in neutral while shifting. Then it seized up on me. I used the search and found similar examples but the only difference is that I can't go into any gear 1,2,3,4,5,6 but I can still start the car and I starting it in 1st gear but as soon as I started letting off the clutch it started to rumble. I have two questions A)what is the problem B)will infiniti still cover this being that i went F/I

LT_350Z Jan 16, 2008 05:57 PM

this happened to me before in my old car...i brought it to the shop and my clutch ended up being dead

TreeFiddyZee Jan 16, 2008 06:00 PM

Check your master cylinder. Either your low on fluid or you need a new clutch. Your leg didn't shorten up overnight did it? Just checking.

carrera4s Jan 16, 2008 06:08 PM

I have a new JWT clutch in and I checked the fluids. The clutch seems to work fine but the shifter won't go into gear. When the car is off the shifter works fine though. When its on it won't go into gear.....so confused

That sucks. I hate to say it, but I would somehow doubt that infiiniti would be willing to repair your transmission under warranty. My guess is that they'll say your transmission problems stem from your FI, and thus they're not responsible. Best thing to do probably is take it in and see for yourself.

Adjust your clutch pedal engagement point. If it was adjusted properly for the old worn clutch, then chances are it won't disengage with the new clutch. There are threads for the adjustment procedure on here, and on the g35driver board.

The new JWT clutch was working fine for over 1000miles and then all of the sudden it the gear changer seized up

TreeFiddyZee Jan 17, 2008 04:54 PM

The "all of a sudden" makes me think the clutch wasn't installed quite right. Something may have come loose.

Plenty of fluid in the reservoir? Any leaks? Can you get under the car and see if the mechanical action makes it to the clutch fork while someone steps on the clutch?

carrera4s Jan 18, 2008 12:51 PM

There is plenty of fluid in the reservoir and no leaks.

Same problem

Hey man I'm having the same problem u did with my car not going into gear, what was your solution I'm freakin out!!!

winchman Sep 30, 2011 02:04 PM

The car won't go into gear with the engine running because the clutch is dragging. You just need to find out why.

It could be that fluid is leaking past the cup in the master cylinder, and the pedal motion isn't being transferred to the slave cylinder. That wouldn't show up as a leak, since the fluid just goes back into the reservoir.

What year is your car?

Lynx350Z Oct 6, 2011 05:41 AM

I am having a similar problem with my 07 350 Z 6MT. I had a ACT HD Clutch kit installed and it was fine for a couple day then for the past 2 mornings when I get in my car it won't go into gear at all. I have to slam it into gear then after just a couple minutes of driving it shifts fine. All my fluids are good, I'm waiting to hear back from my mechanic but I stumbled on this thread so I thought I'd see if I could get some advice.

THIS - you beat me to it...

if you checked everything on the outside and it all checks out - then your issue is going to on the inside :icon9:...WOOT! fun times..:icon14:

DEPENDING ON THE YR of your car - pivot ball may have failed - I have this in my garage right now..

I had an issue with a JWT flywheel that sounds similar...

I bought it used and didn't notice some of the thread were a little messed up wen I installed it.. Being that its aluminum the threads that u use to attach it to the pressure plate are easily stripped... After about 5 k and a couple of 4k launches the pressure plate and flywheel began spreading apart.
I took down the tranny n found that 6 of the 9 bolts stripped outta the flywheel... The car was unable to go into gear while running, would go into gear wen not running, then once I started it, it would start rolling forward...

Easy way to check this before removing the tranny is take the dust cover off the fork on the side of the tranny n look in while turning the motor either from the front of the crank or have some one bump the key, u should see it wobbling if the car is running and the 2 pieces are separating...

This had me perplexed for like a week, I went out n changed the master cylinder, added a Teflon steel braided line, bought a power bleeder, bled the clutch hard core until I found the above..

Jus a suggestion!

Good luck

Ray

This would be prime time to upgrade to the Cast fork and shorter pivot ball, The stamped fork in the car you show flex A LOT with aftermarket clutches and cause poor clutch release and worn syncros.

All 04-up use the cast fork.

I have kits with SCM-435 machined steel heat treated pivot balls with all the hardware needed to swap available here.

Listed under the Z32 section but use the exact same parts for either car.
HD Cast clutch fork and pivot ball combo.

This will never ever break ;)

This is very old , but worth asking. how can you remove the broken part of the pivot ball inside the bell housing

92K1500 Apr 28, 2015 07:59 AM

Drill it and use an easy out. It shouldn't be in there that tight.

I replaced my pivot ball with a chromoly ball when I installed my JWT clutch. about 20k miles later and still working fine.
