Motor Dies After Start Up(unless rev'd)

Hey my parents have an 02 Maxima. Everytime it starts the rev's drop off and the motor dies. Unless you give it a quick rev right when it cranks over. Not sure what the prob. is. Any advice would be appreciated! :)

the exact same thing happened to my parents 98 maxima, and they had to replace the starter and the flywheel. The car had about 86k miles on it, so i guess it was right about that time to get it replaced.

hmmm. The starter seems fine since it cranks right up and turns on. Just dies if you don't rev it once. Only takes one rev for it not to die

the car seemed fine for a few months eventhough i had to rev it up to keep it idling and it cranked up fine but a few months later starter failed and i replaced that. Than the mechanic (cousin of mine) figured out that it was also a flywheel issue when we would crank it up and it would hesistate starting up, we replaced that too and problem went away.

How many miles?
Could be a plugged/plugging fuel filter. Failing MAF. Dirty air filter. :dunno:

true. I'll check out those few things. How would I check the fuel filters, seems like they would be hard to get to. Car has 68K miles.
Thanks for all the imput

just banged out the dirt from the air filter(prety clean), checked the MAF. Seemed fine?????

Fuel filter isn't really checkable. You just replace it at the recommended mileage (in my case, I change more frequently).

You can't really check the MAF either without sticking it on a computer.

Ohhhh noessssssss

<- got tricked into viewing a non-Z thread.

any ideas on how to replace the filter on the maximas

TreeFiddyZee Jun 16, 2009 07:49 PM

It looks like it's in the fuel tank like the Z.

I'm not sure that's correct though. I'm finding conflicting info.

edit: Found a good DIY.

Stalling

if the car is starting(cranking over)fine and it just seems to die if you dont rev it up,it sounds like you have and idle problem at start up..you may need to have the idle relearned, its a pretty simple process but unfortunately can only be done with a consult device from the dealer

labelworkshop75 Jun 20, 2009 08:44 AM

Ha. I went to the local Nissan dealer and spoke with a master tech. And thats EXACTLY what he said. 30$ for the relearn. Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

Gotta love it when it doesn't cost you your firstborn to get something fixed.
