I have a quick question, I have to take my son's 07 Z in, I was going to just get the cylinder TSB done but he tells me he is having grind when downshifting from 6th to 5th, so they said they might change the tranny if needed.

My question is if you also got a new clutch with the new tranny? The dealer is telling me no but when I had mine changed on my 03 it came with a clutch

bump.

My cousin and I have 07 Z's, both stick. I have 63k miles and he has 70k, but while we were in his car yesterday he downshifted into 5th from 6th (around 50mph) and there was an audible scratching noise, I guess you can call it a grind. We figured it was due to user error. Anyway, he called me today and said it happened two more times downshifting into 5th gear.

I took him to my mechanic who I trust with all my cars. not only is he extremely knowledgeable but honest too. Rather than buy a used low mileage unit (because they arent really tested properly to ensure 100% working functionality), he suggested replacing the 5th gear synchro. Dropping the tranny, doing the synchro work is coming out to around $800 including the new nissan synchro.

I want him to make the right move...is replacing a synchro the best way to go presuming its done by a very competent shop? Buying a new unit isnt an option as it is too much for him.

EDIT: It seems like its only a downshifting issue into 5th from 6th. Upshifting into 5th is butter.

08 HR here. Received my first 5th gear downshift grind around 25K miles (only when cold). Had transmission replaced under warranty. It's been about 5k miles on the new transmission and I now have the exact same issue. Is this a known weak point for our transmissions?

Trans was replaced here on an 07. Frist 6th gear was crunching, then eventually 5th. Replaced trans at 20k I think, I am at 95K now with no trouble.

could it be that you're not rev matching? That would be easier on the synchros.

what gear oil are you all using? I did a search here and most who have grinding issues are not using the Nissan 75w-85 MTF. Even using 75w-90 Nissan MTF caused issues with some people's transmissions and I read about a TSB stating Nissan dealers should only use 75w-85.
